One reason for the login, as I understand it, is this allows the user to create an account that tracks their progress in a course, maps which they have completed etc. Useful to the indvidual, and also when the platform is used (for example) to track if a fellow/nextgen has take the prerequisite course before an ICANN meeting (student of an IG school done the same etc)
