Having been involved in one of the script panels of IDN, the situation with regards to variants is at least an order of magnitude worse than Satish suggests. We had no direction as to how similar (and to how many languages using the same script) something had to be in order to qualify as a variant. Which seems likely to lead to different providers using very different criteria, with a negative impact on Universal Acceptance.
