Updated Mandate

At the Dakar meeting the At-Large New gTLDs WG was renewed.  The current mandate includes the following work items:

  • Objection Process: At-Large is charged with developing a method to accept, filter and submit community-based objections to TLD proposals (similar to what the GAC will have)
  • Applicant Support Issues: With the JAS report complete, that group will be winding down but it will be necessary for At-Large to monitor its acceptance and implementation (to the extent that it is accepted and implemented)
  • Outreach evaluation & recommendation
Review and remediation of poor results in both applications for new gTLDs and applications for support from developing economies.
  • At-Large New gTLD Rollout Issues Workspace: As the gTLD process unfolds, At-Large will want to observe its rollout and may develop further advice on it going forward.

At that time, the ALAC appointed Avri Doria as chair of the group starting at the end of the Dakar meeting, with Evan Leibovitch serving as the ALAC liaison to the WG.
The WG will use the recently developed set of Working Guideline produced in the NGSO with major representation from At-large as the guideline for the group operations.  These guidelines can be found at: <http://gnso.icann.org/council/annex-1-gnso-wg-guidelines-07apr11-en.pdfguidelines>  and <http://gnso.icann.org/council/summary-gnso-wg-guidelines-06apr11-en.pdfsummary> .  These are, however, only guidelines and the GTLD WG will, over time, adapt them to its own needs.

Original Description

On 1 November 2007 at the Annual General Meeting, the ICANN Board approved the New GTLDs Policy agreed by the GNSO. This means that it is now up to the staff of ICANN to propose, for public comment and review, the practical implementation of the process by which new GTLDs will be added to the root zone.

As a result of this, the At-Large Advisory Committee created a new working group to follow developments. All interested participants in the At-Large community are encouraged to join!

To join the working group, simply join the working group mailing list and introduce yourself.
