Sometimes you want to machine translate a document in one language to another language.

There are different approaches:

Use Google Translate

https://translate.google.com/ allows you to translate the text of a document such as a PDF. Here's a screencast showing how to select the language and upload a PDF.

Note that detailed formatting of the PDF is not preserved.

Using Google Docs

If you are a Google user with a Gmail account, you can use Google Docs to upload and convert a document to Google Docs and then use the built in translation tools of Google Docs to create a new language version of your document.

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office users can translate documents within Microsoft Office. Watch the YouTube video "How To Use the Translation Features of Microsoft Word" from Microsoft Research

Microsoft DocTranslator

Microsoft has posted an Document Translator application for Windows with associated source code that uses Microsoft Translator to translate Office documents (in Word, Excel, Powerpoint), PDF files (PDF translation requires Office 2013 to be installed) and plain text files directly, individually or in batches.

Quoting from the Document Translator GitHub page:

"Microsoft Translator’s Document Translator allows you to translate your Word, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text or Excel documents quickly and easily. The Document Translator translates up to 2 million characters (roughly 650 pages) per month for free with a subscription to the Microsoft Translator API. For higher volumes you can upgrade to a paid subscription. Documents can be translated individually or in batches, with the original formatting intact, into all 50 languages supported by Microsoft Translator. Document Translator can be run from the command line as well.

Document Translator has several features designed with businesses and developers in mind:

  • Enable the no-trace option on your translated content by using your company’s no-trace enabled subscription
  • Connect to the Microsoft Translator Hub
  • Customize the Document Translator’s source code for your needs
  • Interactive use or command line operation for integration into batch workflows
  • Runs on Windows 7 and above"
