  4. At the Capacity meeting, MOODLE was raised as a possible platform option for online learning for ICANN training programmes.

    I work as a part-time tutor and eLearning Coordinator with the University of the South Pacific (USP) and they use MOODLE to present their courses to distance learners here in the Pacific. It is quite user-friendly and offers lots of options to provide information for students - news features, forum discussions, email tutors and lecturers,, as well as enable them to check administration sections for grades, feedback from lecturers. I would support it as a fairly user-friendly but also broadband-friendly option especially for members of developing countries.  At USP Moodle is supplemented by tutorials (face to face in Fiji and on various campuses across the Pacific) or by Skype or Hangout for outer island students whom I visit once a month.

Although I may be tutoring using the Moodle platform, I am currently doing a United Nations Institution for Training and Research (UNITAR) course to support two government employees in Agriculture and Marine, The course is focused on promoting Agricultural and NGO activities through social media. This is a little more interactive - there are more forum, blog type activities, as well as enabling powerpoint type presentations for introducing the information - with frequent linked references to relevant online sites - and using lots of audio and visual contexts more flexibly. This is used a lot in Africa, and now across the Pacific, so it is user and broadband friendly. If you can find out what they are using, this too is an option I would recommend. Student support is always an issue with distance learning, and in this programme, the facilitator is available all the time, and encourages dialogue directly with him or with other students. Because this is an international course it means that he has to be available 24x7!

  6. And as a Distance learning Coordinator, my experiences have been quite varied with regards to online learning.

    Diplo was my first real engagement with online learning where I experienced what is a really effective interactive learning mechanism - of being able to comment on readings and to add to the comments of others so that a dialogue was built up which could be continued in the weekly online meetings with the facilitator or on the student forum which offered conversation threads. I made a lot of "friends" during my studies with Diplo, many of whom I met at IGFs on my way to becoming involved in ICANN. Diplo really did build communities of learners and some long-time friendships.

    While I was studying with Massey University in NZ, by distance, the lecturers used different modes of communication depending on what they knew or were more comfortable with. I attended a day-long course on Adobe Connect, which was a series of lectures provided on power-point with the tutor facilitating discussions via chats and audio which he managed to help with broadband connectivity. They also use STREAM on which new learning material was added, and forum discussions were initiated online. Forum discussions were also streamed to email for those who couldn't get to the actual forum often enough.  ICANN uses Adobe for its meetings and it is a good format for enabling conversation, presenting documents and powerpoints, And at the same time conversations and chats can happen at the same time to enhance understanding without interrupting the presenter. WebEx  which is used a lot by ISOC is similar but not as flexible, I don't think.

    I also found Adobe connect to be very effective - it handles lag, disconnects and low bandwidth issues with ease - makes it overall a much better experience. I know they've listed the "Virtual Meeting Room" under "High Bandwidth" - but in use it consumes roughly 17-20kbps - and ping does not affect/matter too much
