At ICANN 55 at Marrakech, there is a Tuesday March 8 2016 slot between 14:00 and 18:30. A shuttle bus has been reserved for At-Large at this time.

What type of Outreach and Engagement activities could be done?

There are two sets of persons identified so far - University of Rabat students which are 4 hours away from Marrakech, this means that a day trip to and from Rabat is not practical . 2nd is a local university 10min away from venue so can go to them

Option 1 - use bus to bring persons to meet with selected At-Large persons on Tuesday

  • prep briefing material for distributing to possible outreach candidates such as university students or civil society groups. There are 2 ALSes in Morocco
  • then on the Tuesday, use the bus to bring the university students, civil society persons to the ICANN venue and taken to a room with interpreters for the O&E and AFRALO members can meet and talk about ICANN, At-Large. Having interpreters would highlight the diversity at ICANN. (1 hr)
  • depending on the numbers, walk around the venue in groups (paired with a native FR speaker) and show the various sessions happening at the same time (1 hr)
  • meet back in the room with interpreters and try to answer questions about what the students have heard and seen. Invite the students to attend the rest of the session and show them how to do so remotely or coming to the venue for the remainder of the ICANN meeting (1hr)
  • bus transports students back to the university (final hour). The AFRALO showcase is later, so can such persons say on to attend that before having the bus return them

Uses the 4 hours where the bus is available, better show what ICANN is about

Option 2 - use bus to go to a venue to meet persons to talk about At-Large on Tuesday

  • security challenge to bring persons to venue - persons have to pre-register and have forms of ID
  • a sub group of speakers could go to a local university 10 mins away and present on ICANN, At-Large

Option 3 - bring students to attend Sunday and Monday sessions

  • Having a Tuesday outreach event in the middle of the ICANN meeting isn't really great in the sense that Sunday sessions for newcomers would be more beneficial to the newcomers.
  • So is there a possibility to have some support (hotel, transport) for Rabat students to come there for two days so they will experience Sunday and Monday activities and also have transport support for local university students to attend Sunday and Monday?

Other issues:

Are there outreach opportunities to civil society groups ?

The civil society groups will be attending capacity building in the morning hours.

Can the Nextgen program be used to also involve the university students? Or just Fellowship

Yes, the NextGen program can be used though the challenge is that the numbers will be over whelming for Jaunice as they have only 32 members. Probably we could have Jaunice give a brief session to the students about NextGen
