What is Adobe Connect?

ICANN and the ICANN At-Large community uses Adobe Connect, a web conferencing tool for its online conference calls and F2F public meetings. Adobe Connect allows participants (either face to face or remotely)  to

  • instant message each other
  • review the meeting agenda and documents
  • follow presentations and raise their hands in order to make comments.

in a virtual meeting room over the Internet. Using Adobe Connect is therefore very important for anyone wanting to participate in ICANN meetings.

Windows or MacOS users

Before October 2017, computers running Windows or MacOS required Adobe Flash Player to be installed in their browser. However in October 2017, Adobe announced the availability of standalone Adobe Connect meeting applications for Windows and MacOS which can join a Adobe Connect meeting WITHOUT requiring Adobe Flash Player installed.

Given the standalone applications alleviate the need to install and maintain Adobe Flash (and requiring Windows and MacOS users to always update to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player due to serious security flaws discovered in older versions of Adobe Flash), it is recommended to use the standalone Adobe Connect applications for Windows or Mac and to uninstall Adobe Flash if you are not using Flash for any other purpose.

Adobe is developing a new HTML client that runs in any modern browser without the need for Flash Player or other plug-ins according to their blog post on June 26 2018. No release date has been specified.

Linux users

Computers running Linux will require the installation of Adobe Flash plugin. While for many years, the Adobe Flash Player for Linux was not updated with the versions for Windows and MacOS, Adobe announced on August 31 2016 that the NPAPI Flash version for Linux (which allows the Flash Player to be installed as a plugin in many browsers) will once more be updated to be in sync with the Windows and Mac versions until 2020.

This means that you can visit https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ in your browser on Linux and download the Flash Player NPAPI for use with plugin based browsers like Mozilla Firefox. You can also use Google Chrome for Linux which has the builtin Flash Player.

It is VERY important to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player due to serious security flaws in older versions of Adobe Flash.
