Title: The impact of technological advancements on ICANN: Ensuring the management of unique identifiers remains efficient and effective.

Introduction:

The Internet landscape is constantly evolving with new technologies and protocols emerging. How is ICANN and stakeholders adapting to these changes and ensuring that the management of unique identifiers remains efficient and effective?

Objective:

The aim of this session is to identify emerging technologies that influence the Internet unique identifiers. Discuss how ICANN and the multi-stakeholder model are adapting and using new technologies to manage the Internet unique identifiers.

In this session we will explore how ICANN addresses the challenges and opportunities posed by technological advancements to ensure the efficient and effective management of unique identifiers.

The session includes three parts:

  • Part A:

Technological Advancements and their impact on Unique identifiers

In part A we will explore the latest technical advancements in the Internet domain such as IoT, AI, IPv6 adoption, 5G networks, LEO satellite technology, decentralised identifiers and blockchain among others.

We will discuss their impact on Internet users and how these advancements create new opportunities in managing the DNS.

  • Part B

ICANN's Technical Initiatives

We will present some of ICANN's technical initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the DNS and the unique identifiers. Additionally, projects related to root zone management, DNSSEC deployment and others will be highlighted.

  • Part C

The role of the Multi-stakeholder Community

We will emphasize the importance of the multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by technological advancements.

Multi-stakeholder progress is underway

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN<https://www.icann.org/>) is a multi-stakeholder group that coordinates the management of the Domain Name System, which ensures that all users of the internet can find all valid addresses. In August 2020, ICANN released a Hyperlocal Root Zone Technical Analysis<https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/octo-027-25aug21-en.pdf> focused on the use of more local, decentralized approaches to content distribution to reduce latency - including by using "hyperlocal root service deployments." In essence, this analysis explored how to organize the logistics of internet content distribution, given the trend towards decentralization efforts like edge computing. Given ICANN's role of maintaining internet addresses and domain names for the internet globally, their analysis should have wide influence.
