    1. Thank you Mr. Bill Jouris for a lucid presentation on Latin Script and the PPT.

As you are aware, the internationalized domain name (IDN) homograph attack is used to form domain names that visually resemble legitimate domain names, albeit, using a different set of characters. The prevention is based on Registration and Access.

On the server-side, ICANN issued several policies over the past few years to limit the efficacy of IDN homograph attacks in ccTLD registry operators.

Are the choices of Latin script generators due to this constraint as well ?

      Observation:

Unicode “confusables” make up a significant percentage of the characters found in IDNs. Some research reports indicate close to 90%. A “confusable” is a Unicode code point that is often easily confused with other characters, ligatures (join for two or more letters to form a single glyph), and/or digraphs (two letters that make a single sound).

      My earlier experience:

Very limited work on mappings for Tamil Scripts with due regards to the Tamil Alphabet in Tamizh that was transliterated for the preliminary work. This was way back in 1988-89. There were bottlenecks in the formal mapping to the QWERTY Keyboard and UNICODE.

      /* EDIT DATED 11 MARCH 2022 */

The QWERTY layout was borrowed from the typewriters and the design was to ensure the prevention of jamming.

It is understandable that there were FOUR variants of the layout for English. TWENTY THREE other languages have variant layouts. The Windows Operating System is the most known Operating System driven layout variant. Very easily at least 10 variants to support multilingualism can also be traced. Layout design for the Keyboard and the native language is a good challenge.

In the passing, I wish to mention that the mouse operates on the primitives called "click and drag" that also have medical implications unlike the ten fingure based operation of a keyboard.

      Thank you again.

      Dr. Gopal T V

    2. (Internationationalized) Domain Names: Specifically on "Registration and Access":

“Control over the ‘top-level’ domains such as .com and .edu indirectly gives control over all domain names, and so is something of great power. Who should exercise that power? … One problem is that the better domain names will wind up with the people or companies that have the most money, crippling fairness and threatening universality.”

      ............................

“technical decision to make [DNS] a single point of reliance can be exploited politically for power and commercially for profit.”

      • Tim Berners-Lee,,"Weaving the Web: The Original Design and Ultimate Destiny of the World Wide Web", Harper Business, November 7, 2000

.edu domains are highly vulnerable. Thankfully, in my humble opinion, only the "consolidation risks" may need to thought of for "Registration".

In the passing, I wish to mention that the usage of the term "handle" has been in vogue for nearly 200 years to mean title or pseudonym or nickname. Devices and Technology to work with the "handles" on the internet affect the experiences, uses, and identities.

I am sorry, I will not be attending the CPWG meeting on 13 October 2021 as I am traveling by road. I eagerly await the Official Communique.

      Dr. T V Gopal

PS: I wonder if the distinction among the terms Domain, Website and URL is so sharp as it used to be earlier due to plenty of advances in devices, technologies and algorithms. Also, any day the shorter "domain names" have a higher degree of usability over the longer ones but they are all taken very soon due the less number of possible combinations of the number of characters. There are work arounds for this.
