    1. The Grace and Elegance of Statistics

"Relationship between Sample Size and Margin of Error"

The margin of error for sample estimates will shrink with the square root of the sample size.

      Example:

For a sample of 200 the margin of error is 7.1% ; For 1000 it is 3.2% ; For 5000 it is 1.4%

In general, the amount by which the margin of error decreases is most substantial between samples sizes of 200 and 1500.

For many exercises in ICANN, I am of the opinion that unless the sample size is at least 1000, it may not be wise to even "pencil" an observation or state a trend. ICANN is wonderfully working with such complexities.

On a 5000 sample, there can be at most less than 2 cases that are not fitting. In other words 4998 are fitting a statement only 2 are not fitting is passable. But 3 not fitting is a question.

As the variability in the population of the sample increases, the margin of error increases. As the confidence level increases, the margin of error increases.

The Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is a statistical premise that, given a sufficiently large sample size from a population with a finite level of variance, the mean of all sampled variables from the same population will be approximately equal to the mean of the whole population. In other words all this always approximtes to ta a Bell Curve (NORMAL Distribution). The bell curve is always acceptable & reasonable to a  due to its sheer symmetry. Sample sizes equal to or greater than 30 are often considered sufficient for the CLT to hold.

When sample sizes are small, as is often the case in practice, the Central Limit Theorem does not apply. One must then impose stricter assumptions on the sample to give statistical validity to the test procedure.

Is a simple and obvious poll outcome on a possible opinion enough for correctness ?

It can indicate "acceptability" for legitimacy.

An acceptable margin of error used by most survey researchers typically falls between 4% and 8% at the 95% confidence level. It is affected by sample size, population size, and percentage. Unfortunately this is a huge margin of error for the minds of technologists.

A higher margin of error in statistics indicates less likelihood of relying on the results of a survey or poll with an (arbitrary / random) sample.

We should always be wary of interpreting a statistically significant effect as reflecting a real effect but even more so in the case of small samples.

I leave it for the discerning  beyond these observations.

This is in response to the post dated Sun, 05 Dec 2021 19:13:46 +0530on the CPWG mailing list with the subject line : [CPWG] [GNSO-TPR] RrSG survey re: domain locks

Quick Note: It has been nicely noted that 30 day + 60 day = 61.9% which is good news.

I have been reading the Regostrar Domains Under Management [DUM] tabulated data as:

      Group A:

      0-5,000 : Zero to 30 Days          - Attention

Into which group do the following top Domain Registrars given below belong to ?

      Domain.com
      Namecheap
      Bluehost
      HostGator
      Google Domains
      Hover
      GoDaddy
      Name.com
      Hostinger
      DreamHost
      HostPapa
      NameSilo
      Dynadot

How many hazards did each group manage ?

It has been nicely noted that 30 day + 60 day = 61.9% which is good news.

In any case, I stand by the "worst - case design of 60 days" that is fully backed by
      the history.

Hope such an analysis can happen some time as we move on with 60 days.
