One registry tried to build a genuine gTLD and the other did not. It may not be possible to guess the future usage of a gTLD especially if a gTLD turns out not to be financially viable based on its original usage as outlined in the application.

I do not think it is a death to m17m, though people love to bring out that old chestnut every time the process is not perfect. I think it is the normal computing science habit of creating a new level of indirection for every problem.
