    1. Thank you all for a memorable ICANN 76 @ Cancun, Mexico. I partcipated online.

      Devices and Things are different.

The concept of IoT and Connected Devices is similar in nature, but they are two very different concepts.

Connected Devices have a primary purpose of communication. Connected devices operate over a common network and  facilitate exchange of information. Connected devices are very much different from IoT devices. The only purpose of Connected Devices over a network is the communication between them. The sender and the receiver are not factored. The focus is only on Safe, Secure and Relible communications. This is the basis f the good old internet.

The term IoT, or the Internet of Things, was introduced by programmers at MIT in the 1990s.  IoT aims to connect all electronic devices and gadgets over a common medium, the internet. The IoT is a system of connected devices, gadgets, and computational devices, with embedded systems that allow sharing of data over the internet.

IoT devices offer a lot more than connected devices when it comes to scalability, upgrades, deep automation, and future relevance.  Internet of Things devices may get affected by privacy and security breach. It may result in reduced safety for users. It is the "Programmability" that is the crux.

Reference:  Peter Norvig, Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years at: https://norvig.com/21-days.html

There are two more terms Equipment and Instruments that need to be carefully addressed. Biomedical Instrumentation is a good set of examples for these two terms. Beds, cabinets, power outlets are Equipment. Rubber Hammer is an instrument.

Musical Instruments are now connected on the internet.

Instruments are the actual sensors that evaluate homeostatic levels and are the portion of a device that create or impart balance through negative feedback loops created in logic.

I wish to mention that, I had a first hand experience in what was called "Business, Financial, Securities and Insurance (BFSI)" sector from the standpoint of "IT Enabled Services (ITES). I know that there are several wizards in the BFSI sector and they use the terms "Instrument" and "Securities" in a profound and brilliantly instinctive manner. Computerization was a stiff challenge in this sector. I also watched it happen at close quarters. My quick notes are given below.

      #Instruments

Any asset that holds capital and which can be traded is a financial instrument. It is noteworthy that financial instruments can be palpable or virtual documents representing a legal agreement of any monetary value.

      #Securities

A security, in a financial context, is a certificate or other financial instrument that has monetary value and can be traded. Securities are usually classified as either equity securities, such as stocks and debt securities, such as bonds and debentures.

Question: Does ICANN Remit distinguish these aspects?

      • Dr. T V Gopal

PS: For the records, the inclusion of Chapter 11 titled "IT Enabled Services" in the Computer Science Textbooks for Plus II students of Government of Tamil Nadu was well appreciated. The first edition of these books came during 2005. Tamil Nadu  has a total of 58,033 schools spread across its 30 districts. Presently, I am serving as the Domain Expert for the Plus I and Plus II Computer Science Textbooks, Government of Tamil Nadu. Plus I is 11th Class and Plus II is 12th Class. My association with the several editions of the Computer Science Textbooks for these classes through the Government of Tamil Nadu is now turning 25 years.

      1. Dear Dr. Gopal,

thank you for raising this topic. ICANN's remit in relation to IoT and to addressing of Devices, is very narrow. In 2019 the SSAC produced a paper and led a discussion named "DNS and the Internet of Things: Opportunities, Risks, and Challenges". I invite you to read their paper, SAC 105 at: https://www.icann.org/en/blogs/details/dns-and-the-internet-of-things-opportunities-risks-and-challenges-18-7-2019-en

    2. I could manage to attend only the Inaugural and the Valedictory sessions of the UA Day @ New Delhi today - 28 March 2023. This was much awaited. As I was listening to the speakers in these sessions,, I was thinking of the following paper.

Brent Silby,"Revealing the Language of Thought", Department of Philosophy, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, 2000,

This was very useful for me as a research paper first.
