February 2018 – SSAC Liaison Report

(as at 27 February 18)

1. SSAC MEETINGS.  The SSAC has held one meeting on 9 February.  The main topic of discussion was the Name Collision Analysis Project (NCAP).

2. SSAC WORK PARTIES.  I am currently serving on four SSAC Work Parties:

  • 2018 SSAC Membership Committee – This Committee has held two meetings on 5 and 12 February.
  • SSAC Review WP – This Work Party has been established to manage the 5-yearly SSAC Organizational Review as mandated in the ICANN Bylaws. The Request for Proposal for the appointment of an Independent Examiner was released on 7 July 2017 and the SSAC was advised on 14 February 2018 that The Analysis Group was the successful bid. This is the same company that has been undertaking the review of the NomCom, although a different team will be involved.  The WP met on 15 and 22 February, the latter meeting being also attended by MSSI Staff and Analysis Group personnel.
  • IoT WP - This Work Party was established to consider challenges to preserving the security, stability, and resilience of the DNS in the emerging “Internet of Things” (IoT). There has been one meeting of this WP on 16 February.
  • Name Collision Analysis Project (NCAP) WP - This Work Party was established to progress the tasking by the ICANN Board at its meeting on 2 November 2017 to study and advise the Board on a number of questions related to name collisions.  The WP has met 5 times on 25 January and 1, 8, 15 and 22 February.  Intentions are to release a draft Project Plan for public comment in the near future.

3. SSAC DOCUMENTS. There have been three SSAC Documents published in this period, all of which have been Correspondence:

4. SSAC REPRESENTATION ON CCWG ACCOUNTABILITY. There has been one meeting since ICANN60 in Abu Dhabi of the CCWG-A Plenary on 7 February which I was unable to attend.  There have been two meetings of the Diversity Sub-group on 8 and 15 February, during which the Public Comments were considered and the Diversity Report updated for submission to the CCWG-A Plenary.
