ICANN 2016 Nominating Committee Announces Selections

The ICANN 2016 Nominating Committee is pleased to announce its selections for seven leadership positions within ICANN.

Those selected will take up their positions after the end of ICANN's Annual General Meeting, which will take place during the ICANN Public Meeting scheduled for 3 – 9 November 2016 in Hyderabad, India.
The Nominating Committee is charged with recruiting and selecting a portion of ICANN's leadership. The Nominating Committee is mandated to ensure that ICANN's overall leadership is diverse in geography, culture, skills, experience and perspective. The basic criteria are that selectees are people of integrity, objectivity, sound judgment; support decision-making within groups; work effectively in English; understand ICANN's mission and operation; are committed to its success; have experience in world affairs; contribute to cultural, professional and geographic expertise; and can work long and hard, generally as volunteers, for the global public trust.
An Independent Body at the Community's Service
Discussing the 2016 Nominating Committee results, Stéphane Van Gelder, the Chair of the 2016 Nominating Committee, shared the following:
"As Chair, it is my honour, pleasure and duty to report that the 2016 Nominating Committee has completed the task assigned to it by the ICANN Community and made the selections shown above.
By the close of the application period on 20 March 2016, the 2016 Nominating Committee had received 105 applications for the seven positions it was tasked with filling.
This substantial growth in applications meant the 2016 Nominating Committee had to apply discipline to its processes and planning. The Nominating Committee members availed themselves admirably of the task the ICANN Community has entrusted them with. Their outstanding dedication shown by the fact that at the close of the official selection work, they decided to reconvene and continue working on issues such as process in order to provide future Nominating Committees with an even more solid base to work from.
I want to thank the Nominating Committee for its work and dedication, which included active participation in the drafting of the Committee's final report to provide in-depth information on the full cycle. The final report is meant as an official recording of this cycle, both for anyone interested in understanding how the Nominating Committee works and for future reference should Nominating Committees need this in the years to come.
I want to extend special thanks to our world class staff support, Joette Youkhanna and Jia Kimoto, to Yrjö Lansipuro for once again providing the Committee and the Community with journalist-level Report Cards on our work, and to Hans Petter Holen and Wolfgang Kleinwächter for supporting me on the Leadership Team throughout the year.
During this year's Annual General Meeting in Hyderabad in November, the Committee will present the ICANN Community with a Final Report detailing its work and providing in-depth data on the applications received.

Two-way collaboration is a critical aspect of the Memorandum of Understanding

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – 25 August 2016 – ICANN and LACTLD, the Latin American and Caribbean Country Code Top-Level Domains Organization, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which they agreed to explore opportunities to collaborate on topics of common interest. The official signing took place today in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. ICANN is a nonprofit corporation with a mission to help ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. LACTLD is a nonprofit association that promotes cooperation and information exchange among regional top-level domains (TLDs).
Göran Marby, ICANN's President and CEO, and Andrés Piazza, LACTLD´s Executive Director, signed the MoU during the Dominican Republic's Internet Week. Both organizations were participating in the event – ICANN holding its third Latin America and Caribbean Domain Name System Forum (LAC DNS FORUM), and LACTLD hosting a technical workshop.
"It is a great milestone for LACTLD, and a huge pleasure for me personally, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with ICANN, which will work as a channel for strengthening our long-standing cooperation in the region," said Andrés Piazza.
Both organizations emphasized the importance of exploring opportunities to build a cooperative working relationship that strengthens the capacity and capability of ccTLD operators in the region. An accompanying goal is to encourage LACTLD members and regional stakeholders to get involved with ICANN´s policy development processes.
"Part of our job as a support organization includes deepening our engagements with partners around the world," said Göran Marby, speaking about LACTLD. "Your work in the region is vital, and I'm proud to sign an MoU that will make your voice heard in important discussions about shaping the Internet."

Mark Jardina Joins ICANN as Vice President of Security Operations

Mark Jardina, an expert in global security and health and safety, has joined the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as Vice President of Security Operations.
"Safety and security of the ICANN stakeholders, Board and the organization are our top priority," said CEO Göran Marby. "Mark brings over 15 years of global security experience gained within the public, private, NGO and diplomatic sectors. We are very pleased to have this in-house expertise."
Building on existing plans developed in partnership with Control Risks and International SOS, Jardina will be responsible for physical security operations. Within his purview are travel advisories (for ICANN meetings, Board meetings and other business-related travel), onsite security at ICANN Public Meetings and events, and security for ICANN offices around the world.
Jardina has an extensive background in global security gained in the international development community, global media development and private sector corporate security, as well as the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Marine Corps. He has international experience in South America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Jardina is fluent in English, Italian and Spanish, and is conversational in Turkish. Jardina is a graduate of the U.S. Marine Corps/Army Military Police Academy, SPAWAR Physical Security School with MDI Systems, and University of Maryland (Business Administration and Homeland Security). He resides in Washington, D.C.

15 individuals from various Universities in the Asian Pacific Region have been selected to participate with ICANN Community Members at the ICANN57 Meeting in Hyderabad India, 3-9 November 2016. These individuals are engaged in studies that encompass policy, business, technical, security, law, and communications. 5 additional selectees who attended a previous ICANN Meeting as NextGenners will now serve as Ambassadors for these newcomers to ICANN.
Individuals were assessed by an independent Selection Committee after submitting an online application and meeting the initial Program requirements. The successful candidates were selected based on their current studies and interest in the work happening in the Internet Ecosystem related to global policy and Internet Governance. They must commit to engage with and learn from the ICANN Community over the Meeting week as well as produce a 10-15 minute presentation related to the work of ICANN and their studies.
