There are two steps involved in adding an attachment while creating a Comment: Step 1-Uploading and Step 2-Referencing (or Linking).

Step 1: Uploading Attachments

There are two convenient ways to attach files while editing a Comment: Drag & Drop or Browse/Upload from your computer/network.

Preferred Format: It is generally advisable to enter comments in plain text to make it easier for subsequent users to read, reply, and quote passages. If you decide to upload an attachment, please use the PDF format because it will normally render in a browser window without requiring a separate download step.

Attachments are Permanent: In this special purpose Public Comments Wiki, comments and attachments may be added; however, to preserve the integrity of the official record, once they are posted/uploaded, they can only be removed by sending a Attachments-How to Upload & Reference to Wiki-Admin and explaining the circumstances (e.g., uploaded incorrect file). Each case will be evaluated individually to ensure that a substantive comment thread is not adversely impacted by such a removal.

To attach a file using Drag & Drop:

  1. Click Add Comment (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window in which you want to attach one or more files.
  2. Drag the file from your computer onto the comment space. The 'Attach File(s)' message box appears, indicating the upload status of the files being attached to your page. Note: you cannot drag-and-drop a folder of files onto a comment.

Attachment Rendering: Images (e.g., PNG, JPG) will be inserted into the comment at their original size. If you click on the image, you can select varying sizes including thumbnail. For most document types (e.g., Word, PDF), Confluence will insert a macro command that will allow the attachment to be viewed automatically when anyone clicks on the comment. Click Preview to see how it will be displayed.

To Browse/Upload a file from your computer/network file system:

  1. Click Add Comment (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window into which the attachment will be uploaded.
  2. Choose Insert > Attachment (or Image) from the menu bar.
  3. Click Choose File ... and navigate to the file within your computer or network.
  4. Select the file and click Open.
  5. The filename will be auto-inserted in the Link Text box; however, you may change it to a more descriptive title (optional).
  6. Click Insert -- the document hyperlink will appear in blue and will open when clicked. Note: if you click Cancel, the document will still be uploaded and can be referenced manually in a separate step (see Step 2 below).

Step 2: Referencing or Linking to an Attachment

Adding a Link using Auto-Complete

If you have previously uploaded an attachment and want to link to it within a comment:

  1. Go to the top page menu and select Tools > Attachments to view the files that are available to be linked within the current page.
  2. In the Add Comment Rich Text Editor, click where you want to insert the link and type '[' followed by the first few characters of the file name.
  3. Click the relevant attachment from the list of suggestions.

To link to a file or image that is attached to the current page:

  1. Click Add Comment (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window in which you want to insert the link.
  2. Click Insert > Link in the editor toolbar, and then the Attachments tab. You will see a list of all files available to be linked. Now you can do one of the following:
    • Click on the file that you want to link.
    • Enter the Link Text that will appear in your comment. Note: it does not have to be the same as the actual filename.
  3. Click Insert to add the link.
  • No labels
