If you are ready to upload a new attachment/image, see column (1) below. If you want to reference/link to an attachment/image previously uploaded to another space/page within the Wiki, see (2).

Preferred Format: It is generally advisable to enter Comments in text to make it easier for subsequent users to read, reply, and quote passages. If you decide to upload an attachment, please use the PDF format because it will normally render in a browser window without requiring a separate download step.

(1) Uploading Attachments

There are two convenient ways to attach files while editing a Comment: Drag & Drop or Browse/Upload from your computer/network.

To attach a file using Drag & Drop:

  1. Click in the Comment box (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window in which you want to attach one or more files.
  2. Drag the file from your computer onto the comment space. The 'Attach File(s)' message box appears, indicating the upload status of the files being attached to your page. Note: you cannot drag-and-drop a folder of files onto a comment.

To Browse/Upload a file from your computer/network file system:

  1. Click in the Comment box (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window into which the attachment will be uploaded.
  2. Choose Insert > Attachment (or Image) from the menu bar.
  3. Click Choose File ... and navigate to the file within your computer or network.
  4. Select the file and click Open.
  5. The filename will be auto-inserted in the Link Text box; however, you may change it to a more descriptive title (optional).
  6. Click Insert -- the document hyperlink will appear in blue and will open when clicked. Note: if you click Cancel, the document will still be uploaded and can be referenced manually in a separate step (see next column).

(2) Referencing or Linking to an existing Attachment

Adding a Link using Auto-Complete

If you wish to reference a previously uploaded attachment/image already existing in another Wiki space/page:

  1. In the Comment box editor window, click where you want to insert the attachment and type '[' (left bracket) followed by a few characters that will identify the filename. A list of available attachments/images will be displayed.
  2. Click the relevant attachment from the available list.

A Search function is also available in the drop-down menu if you cannot remember where the attachment/image is located.

To link to a file or image that is attached to the current page:

  1. Click in the Comment box (bottom of a page or blog post) to open the window in which you want to insert the link.
  2. Click Insert > Link in the editor toolbar, and then the Attachments tab. You will see a list of all files available to be linked. Now you can do one of the following:
    • Click on the file that you want to link.
    • Enter the Link Text that will appear in your comment. Note: it does not have to be the same as the actual filename.
  3. Click Insert to add the link.

Attachment Rendering: Images (e.g., PNG, JPG) will be inserted into the comment at their original size. If you click on the image, you can select varying sizes including thumbnail. For most document types (e.g., Word, PDF), Confluence will insert a macro command that will allow the attachment to be viewed automatically when anyone clicks on the comment. Click Preview to see how it will be displayed.
