At-Large Plenary Session 2 - NIS2 Building Trust on the Internet through Registrant Verification

Session Details:

The World Economic Forum’s “Reimagining Digital ID” recently noted that “[d]espite a sustained focus on ID, the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies, and the rapid development of AI, the internet lacks an ID layer.” This session will focus on innovations by TLD registry operators (both gTLD and ccTLD) designed to increase trust in their respective namespace through the use of enhanced registrant verification.  This session is designed to be hybrid, incorporating both in-person and remote panelists. The session will incorporate two panels. The first will level-set on the topic of trust and registrant verification by looking at the recent NIS 2.0 Directive and ongoing standards development work in this area. The second will be a tour de table which will look at the innovation occurring across different TLD operators.

Agenda:: (TBC)

Panel #1 – Level Setting (30 minutes) Approximately 10 minutes per speaker.

This panel will be comprised of three speakers level-setting on the need for trust on the Internet. Tentative Speakers could include:

  • Finn Petersen (engaging in outreach) – DK GAC rep that participated in Eco’s NIS 2.0 Day Zero Event at Hamburg. Finn who is currently serving on the EU Cooperation Group can offer a unique perspective on how best practices are referenced in NIS 2.0.
  • Karla McKenna (engaging in outreach)  – Head of Standards at GLEIF. Karla can speak to how the G20 sought to reinstall trust into the financial sector after 2008 economic meltdown by creating GLEIF. Karla can speak to the global success of LEIs and the latest innovation by GLEIF regarding vLEIs
  • TBD – This panelist will speak to the current standards work taking place globally in the areas of digital identity and trust services.

Panel #2 – Tour de Table of Registrant Verification Innovation

There will be a rapid-fire series of presentations (3-5 minutes) by TLD registry operators discussing their respective business use cases for implementing enhanced registrant verification. Potential panelists that I have engaged in preliminary outreach include:

  • .PHARMACY (tentative yes)
  • .BANK (tentative yes)
  • .SWISS (engaging in outreach)
  • .BE (engaging in outreach)
  • .CZ (tentative yes)
