This report detailed our attendance and activities at the Ghana School of Internet Governance 2023, which took place from June 23th to June 30th, 2023, in Accra, Ghana. The purpose of our participation in this event was to represent AFRLAO and promote the concept of Universal Acceptance (UA) in Internet governance discussions.

I would like to express my gratitude to ICANN for sponsoring my attendance at this significant gathering.

2) Describe the details of your attendance
and
activities at the meeting (including sessions
attended, written or oral contributions made to
specific sessions, etc.):

Attendance and Activities:

During the Ghana School of Internet Governance, I actively engaged in various sessions, workshops, and discussions. My participation can be summarized as follows:

Preparatory Work: Prior to the event, I thoroughly prepared for my 2-hour presentation on Universal Acceptance and Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). This involved conducting extensive research, organizing my content, and ensuring that I was well-prepared to deliver a comprehensive and informative session.

Oral Contribution: On  27th June 2023, I delivered a 2-hour presentation on Universal Acceptance and IDNs to an attentive audience. The presentation aimed to raise awareness about the importance of equal treatment for all domain names and email addresses, irrespective of script, language, or region. I emphasized the need for inclusivity in Internet access and usage, highlighting the benefits of UA for the African region. The presentation was well-received, generating insightful discussions and questions from the participants.

Panel Discussions and Workshops: Throughout the event, I actively participated in panel discussions and workshops related to Internet governance. I contributed my perspectives, shared experiences, and engaged in fruitful discussions with fellow participants and experts. These interactions provided valuable insights into current challenges, best practices, and emerging trends in the field.

Networking and Collaboration: I took advantage of the networking opportunities provided during the Ghana School of Internet Governance. I connected with individuals, organizations, and stakeholders involved in Internet governance, fostering collaborations and building partnerships. These connections have the potential to contribute to AFRLAO's future projects and activities, as well as strengthen our engagement in the Internet governance community.

Knowledge Acquisition: The event provided a platform for comprehensive knowledge acquisition in various aspects of Internet governance. I attended presentations, panel discussions, and workshops that covered topics such as human rights in the digital age, digital inclusion and technologies, e-governance formulation, and more. The insights gained from these sessions will be valuable in shaping AFRLAO's strategies and advocacy efforts.

Outcome and Plans for Follow-Up Activities:

The participation in the Ghana School of Internet Governance yielded several positive outcomes and opportunities. These include:

Raised Awareness and Advocacy: Through my presentation on Universal Acceptance, I successfully raised awareness about the importance of equal treatment for all domain names and email addresses. I highlighted the benefits of UA for the African region and emphasized the need for inclusivity in Internet access. As a result, the concept of UA gained recognition among the participants, and discussions around it were initiated.

To continue the advocacy for Universal Acceptance, I plan to:

  • Develop educational materials and resources on UA specifically tailored for the African region.

Engage with AFRLAO members to raise awareness about UA and encourage their active participation in promoting UA principles within their communities.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders and organizations to organize workshops, webinars, and awareness campaigns focused on UA.
  • Enhanced Visibility of AFRLAO: Through active participation, networking, and engagement in discussions, I ensured that AFRLAO was visible and recognized at the Ghana School of Internet Governance. I shared AFRLAO's initiatives, achievements, and perspectives on Internet governance issues specific to the African region.

To further enhance the visibility of AFRLAO, I plan to:

  • Collaborate with the AFRLAO Secretariat to develop communication materials that highlight AFRLAO's involvement in the Internet governance community.
  • Actively contribute to online platforms and mailing lists related to Internet governance to represent AFRLAO's interests and perspectives.
  • Seek opportunities to speak at regional and international events to share AFRLAO's experiences and advocate for Internet governance issues relevant to the African region.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: The event provided a platform for building collaborations and partnerships with individuals, organizations, and stakeholders involved in Internet governance. These collaborations can contribute to AFRLAO's future projects and activities, as well as foster a broader engagement in the Internet governance community.

To strengthen collaborations and partnerships, I plan to:

  • Follow up with the contacts made during the event to explore potential joint initiatives, research projects, or advocacy campaigns.
  • Engage in working groups and task forces related to Internet governance where AFRLAO's expertise and perspectives can make a meaningful impact.
  • Leverage existing networks and partnerships to amplify AFRLAO's voice in regional and international Internet governance discussions.
