Section I: Description, Explanation, and Purpose
The Board ratified the Global Policy for Post Exhaustion IPv4 Allocation Mechanisms by the IANA in May. This public comment period is intended to gather input on options for implementation.
Section II: Background
The policy requires ICANN to "make appropriate modifications to the 'Internet Protocol V4 Address Space' page of the IANA website." Since the policy was ratified, the RIRs have returned approximately 1¼ /8s of address space in almost 150 prefixes. The purpose of this consultation [PDF, 371 KB] is to gather input on the most appropriate way to make these changes for the different users of the IANA IPv4 address registries. The policy also requires IPv4 addresses to be allocated to the RIRs and we would like to gather input on the most appropriate mechanism to select the address blocks to be allocated.
