13:59:07 From Silvia Vivanco to Everyone:
Welcome
13:59:09 From Heidi Ullrich to Everyone:
Welcome, All.
14:07:44 From Adrian to Everyone:
Thank you Silvia, thank you Heidi
14:08:32 From Heidi Ullrich to Everyone:
Disclaimer: ICANN org staff take note of the PPT contents presented at today’s call commenting on ICANN org’s efforts on the issue accessibility. ICANN org staff was not approached for updates in advance of this webinar and has not reviewed the contents of this presentation. If NARALO leaders feel strongly enough about such concerns, we suggest ideas be placed in writing to the VP, Policy Development and At-Large Relations.
14:09:19 From Herb Waye to Everyone:
Greetings everyone, sorry for the late arrival. Hope everyone is safe and healthy.
14:12:46 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
ADA is pretty central to ICANN Learn course design.
14:13:35 From alangreenberg to Everyone:
Sorry to be late.
14:17:22 From Devan Reed - ICANN Org to Everyone:
Welcome, Alan
14:27:43 From David Mackey to Everyone:
Does anyone know many staff are at ICANN org?
14:29:58 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
The goal should be "accessibility by design."
14:30:09 From David Mackey to Everyone:
@Greg Agreed.
14:36:30 From León Felipe Sánchez Ambía to Everyone:
Kudos to the accessibility team. Your work has really made a difference in inclusiveness at ICANN. I personally find the captioning function as a very useful tool for non-native English speakers
14:36:43 From David Mackey to Everyone:
WC3 Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Standards Overview https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/#intro
14:37:25 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Yes indeed captioning Is a boon for access to meeting material for various reasons
14:39:44 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
ICANN needs an "Accessibility Czar"
14:39:57 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
+1 Greg
14:40:08 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Does it : Not so sure about that
14:40:38 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Me either. that said, Judith's point about making it PART of someone's job makes sense
14:40:41 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
having it as the DNA of an Org tends to work more effectively and efficiently in my NOT so limited experience
14:40:49 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
Cheryl, not necessarily as their ONLY job, but there does need to be someone who is proactively responsible.
14:40:58 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
Definitely needs a champion on staff
14:41:10 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
"Part-Time Accessibility Czar" does not have the same ring to it....
14:41:25 From David Mackey to Everyone:
Web accessibility is a much more advanced field these days. Regardless of staff responsibility, it would be good to understand which accessible standards ICANN should be using
14:41:28 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Greg it should be part of EVERYones Job
14:41:44 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
That only happens if it's someone's job to make it so.
14:41:47 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Sure then it needs to be PTI for everyone
14:42:10 From Bill Jouris to Everyone:
It seems like budgeting for accessibility should be part of the IDN project as well. We put all this effort into making domain names available in other cripts and languages. But that's only part of the need, isn't it?
14:42:17 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
The goal is to have an accessibility aware organization.
14:42:23 From David Mackey to Everyone:
+1 Greg
14:42:27 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Agreed @Greg
14:42:38 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
Again +1 Greg
14:42:58 From Bill Jouris to Everyone:
+1 Greg. But awareness needs to lead to acton as well.
14:44:39 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
There is also a LOt of work that HAS been done
14:45:28 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Good observation @JZ
14:46:25 From León Felipe Sánchez Ambía to Everyone:
The Stakeholder Engagement and Comms teams are certainly aware of the importance of accessibility but I don’t think either have it in their core and it would be important that someone championed it as has been said
14:47:31 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Ages back for screen readers we also used a tiny prompt that took the screen reader off to a more tailored Text base for the information all JUST part of a tool kit for minimal barriers to Access.
14:48:05 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
sorry by we I meant in AU in my advocacy role not ICANN
14:48:24 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
I'm familiar. It's not supported yet but most video streaming site, unfortunately, although it could simply be added as a "language."
14:48:48 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Yup @JZ
14:49:15 From David Mackey to Everyone:
+1 Greg
14:51:24 From David Mackey to Everyone:
ADA = American with Disabilities Act? https://www.ada.gov
14:51:48 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Yes. THAT is what ICANN must adhere to as US non-profit
14:51:53 From David Mackey to Everyone:
k, thx
14:52:07 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Well noted @Greg
14:52:22 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
w3C is voluntary, ADA is not
14:52:39 From David Mackey to Everyone:
@Greg, agreed, testing needs to be done to find compliance
14:52:41 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Yes, that's true about the W3C guidelines.
14:52:45 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
many of the Stds., are highly limited and always therefore evolving
14:53:33 From David Mackey to Everyone:
@CLO standards are getting better
14:53:48 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
and changing often
14:53:59 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
as they no doubt should
14:54:04 From David Mackey to Everyone:
… just like the rest of the web
14:54:09 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Yup
14:54:35 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
which suggests perhaps that ICANN needs it's own guidelines that ARE more specific and act as a framework (for slides, videos, website, etc.) and updated, from time to time
14:55:38 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Get a Stream Deck!
14:56:16 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Indeed @Alan!!
14:58:58 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Well said @Léon it is one of many important aspects of minimal barriers to engagement in ICANN
14:59:41 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
We are lucky to have an advocate for accessibility and inclusiveness on the Board.
15:00:03 From David Mackey to Everyone:
+1 León - accessibility as part of inclusiveness, diversity goals
15:00:07 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Indeed we are @Maureen +++
15:00:36 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Even useful when EN *is* your 1st Language
15:00:50 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
so true Cheryl
15:00:55 From Herb Waye Ombuds to Everyone:
Well said León
15:01:10 From Laura Bengford to Everyone:
Nice to hear these comments and the focus on Accessibility. It was a good effort to improve the education and awareness that RFP with Simply Accessible provided to the E&IT engineering team and helped build accessibility by design, accessibility testing tool, a team lead with Accessibility expertise, and regular rhythm of regression testing. Progress and still a lot of work to do. Thank you.
15:01:14 From David Mackey to Everyone:
Thank you Judith for a great presentation! and all the other good comments. Very useful.
15:01:51 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Yep, thanks Judith!
15:01:54 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
and Laura thanks to you and all the ICANN Staff that have been so committed and supportive of best efforts in this mater
15:02:06 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Yes, YouTube can do some automatic stuff, for sure!
15:02:35 From Herb Waye Ombuds to Everyone:
ICANN as a whole has come a long way in a very short “organizational” time

15:03:21 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
I don't think they support blended audio channels yet but we COULD possibly create a blended audio channel and upload it as a language. Dunno.
15:03:24 From Gregory Shatan to Everyone:
It's all a work in progress.....
15:03:33 From Michelle DeSmyter - ICANN Org to Everyone:
