11 January 2017

The ICANN Nominating Committee (NomCom) invites interested individuals to submit applications and/or recommend candidates for ICANN's key leadership positions. Selected individuals will have a unique opportunity to work with accomplished colleagues from around the globe to help shape the Internet's technical coordination and policy development.

We are inviting applications and recommendations for the following positions:

  • Two members of the ICANN Board of Directors
  • Three representatives to the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) – one each from Africa, Asia/Australia/Pacific Islands and Latin America/Caribbean regions
  • Two members of the Council of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO)
  • One member of the Council of the Country-Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO)

Currently, the eight NomCom-selected Board members are: Maarten Botterman[icann.org], Cherine Chalaby[icann.org], Steve Crocker[icann.org], Asha Hemrajani[icann.org], Rafael Lito Ibarra[icann.org], Khaled Koubaa[icann.org], George Sadowsky[icann.org] and Lousewies Van der Laan[icann.org].

Guided by the broad public interest, those selected will work to fulfill ICANN's mission to coordinate the global Internet's systems of unique identifiers, and in particular, to ensure its stable and secure operation. They will gain valuable insights and experience from working across boundaries of knowledge, responsibility, culture and geography. They will make a valuable public service contribution toward the functioning and evolution of this essential global resource.

Qualifications

Fluency in English is a requirement for all positions.

Other qualifications, skills and time commitments vary depending on the position. For information, visit the NomCom webpage[icann.org].

Application Deadline and Process

For full consideration, ICANN must receive applications by 21 March 2017, 23:59 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC).

All applications are confidential. Selections will be announced in August or September 2017. Successful candidates will assume their positions after ICANN's Annual General Meeting, to be held from 28 October to 3 November 2017.

Meetings, Travel, Reimbursement and Compensation

These positions require regular participation in teleconferences and may involve significant international travel, including travel to ICANN's three annual Public Meetings. Meetings during 2017 will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark (1–16 March); Johannesburg, South Africa (26–29 June); and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (28 October – 3 November).

Reasonable direct expenses incurred in the course of service will be reimbursed.

Each Board Member has the option to receive compensation in accordance with the resolution passed by the Board on 30 July 2014, but is not required to do so. (See Board Member Compensation[icann.org].)

Background

The NomCom is an independent committee tasked with selecting eight members of the Board of Directors and other key positions within ICANN's structure.

It is designed to function independently from the ICANN Board, Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees. NomCom members act only on behalf of the interests of the global Internet community and within the scope of the ICANN mission and responsibilities assigned to it by the ICANN Bylaws.

NomCom members contribute understanding of the broad interests of the Internet community as a whole, and knowledge and experience of specific Internet constituencies who have appointed them.

The challenge for the NomCom is to integrate these perspectives and derive consensus in its selections. Although appointed by Supporting Organizations and other ICANN bodies, individual NomCom members are not accountable to their appointing bodies.

NomCom members are accountable for adherence to the ICANN Bylaws and for compliance with the rules and procedures established by the NomCom.

9 January 2017

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ("ICANN") is seeking a provider to conduct an independent assessment of the Office of the Ombudsman (Ombudsman[icann.org]).

The Ombudsman serves an important function; he acts as an informal dispute resolution office for the ICANN community, who may wish to lodge a complaint about ICANN staff, board or problems in supporting organizations. The purpose of the office is to ensure that the members of the ICANN community have been treated fairly.

The objective of this RFP is to identify an independent assessor to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current Office of the Ombudsman charter and operations, including its unique role in the ICANN community, against relevant best practices and provide recommendations necessary to ensure that the Office of the Ombudsman has the tools, independence, and authority needed to be an effective voice for ICANN stakeholders.

The Review is scheduled to take place from 1 March 2017 through 15 April 2017.

For a complete overview of the RFP including the timeline, please see here[icann.org] [PDF, 589 KB].

Indications of interest are to be received by emailing OmbudsmanAssessment-RFP@icann.org. Proposals should be electronically submitted by 23:59 PST on 31 January 2017 using ICANN's sourcing tool, access to which may be requested via the same email address above.

4 January 2017

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that Jamie Hedlund, Vice President of Strategic Programs for ICANN's Global Domains Division, will take on Allen Grogan's role as Senior Vice President (SVP), Contractual Compliance and Consumer Safeguards, following Grogan's previously announced[icann.org] departure.

"Contractual compliance, consumer safeguards and public responsibility are areas of central importance to ICANN," said CEO Göran Marby. "Jamie has years of ICANN and legal experience, which he will be using to build upon the great work already done by Allen and the rest of the global Contractual Compliance team. Jamie was central to this organization's work on the IANA Stewardship Transition, and I'm delighted to have him contribute further to ICANN's mission."

Duncan Burns, SVP, Global Communications, will take on Hedlund's former responsibilities overseeing U.S. government relations and management of ICANN's Washington D.C. office.

As part of this change, Hedlund will become a member of the Executive Team and report to Göran Marby.

"I am excited to take on this new challenge. Contractual compliance and consumer safeguards are critical to the credibility of ICANN's multistakeholder model. I look forward to working with the whole community to uphold the integrity of our mission and our agreements," said Jamie.

Jamie Hedlund is a senior executive with over 20 years of experience in public policy and business development in the communications industry. He joined ICANN in 2010 as Vice President for Government Affairs for the Americas. In his recent role as Vice President of Strategic Programs for ICANN's Global Domain Division, he worked at the intersection of ICANN's contracts with registries, registrars and global public policy. He was also responsible for ICANN's relationships with North American governments and played a crucial role during the IANA Stewardship Transition.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation and a community with participants from all over the world. ICANN and its community help keep the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It also promotes competition and develops policy for the top-level of the Internet's naming system and facilitates the use of other unique Internet identifiers.

3 January 2017

Los Angeles – 3 January 2017 – ICANN is seeking volunteers for a working group that will explore the development of a framework for ICANN's Registry Service Provider Program. Participants will work with ICANN's Global Domains Division to develop and evaluate solutions for challenges that industry members and ICANN have identified. Some opportunities for improvement include ICANN processes for evaluating or changing registry service providers. When considering the opportunities for improvement, the group will be expected to contemplate the potential effects on enforcement mechanisms, registrars, and overall security, stability and resiliency of the gTLD space.

Roles and Responsibilities

ICANN anticipates that the working group will need approximately 18 months to complete its work, which will occur in two phases:

  • Framework development (about six months).
  • Implementation (about 12 months).

Those who are interested can take on one of two roles, active participant or observer.

Active Participant

Active participants can expect to:

  • Join a call (60-90 minutes) on a weekly basis.
  • Discuss topics on a mailing list.
  • Review documents, potentially up to two hours per week.

Observer

Observers will keep abreast of the conversation by following the mailing list. There are no expectations regarding time or attendance.

Join the Working Group

Statements of Interest must be submitted by 23:59 UTC on 30 January 2017.

To submit a Statement of Interest, visit https://community.icann.org/x/OqPDAw[community.icann.org].

  • If you have an existing ICANN community wiki account, log in to submit your SOI.

The goal of the Program is to help create a broader base of knowledgeable constituents to engage in the ICANN multistakeholder process and become the new voice of experience in their regions and on the global stage.

Since its creation in 2007, the Fellowship Program has built a strong group of individuals who are actively participating in all of the ICANN communities as well as various Internet governance entities within the Internet ecosystem. Their engagement ranges from writing articles and blogs, providing online or in-person public comment in regard to bottom up policy building, engaging in Internet conferences and panel discussions, lifting a pen in working groups, mentoring newcomers, assisting our regional leaders and becoming leaders themselves.

Usually comprised of more than 400 different sessions, these meetings are the focal point for individuals and representatives of the different ICANN stakeholder groups to introduce and discuss issues related to ICANN policy. Participants may attend in person or remotely. Meetings are open to everyone and registration is free.
