As a recent member of the IPC, and one of the very few members based in the Africa region, my attendance at the Marrakech meeting is in-line with the IPC’s FY19 Outreach Strategy (https://community.icann.org/display/CROP19/IPC+Outreach+Strategic+Plan), in particular:

  • Supports the Mission & Purpose of the IPC which requires robust and sustained participation from the Intellectual Property community from all over the world.  The IPC should strive for its membership to be representative of the diversity in the IP community - geographically, professionally, and culturally - while satisfying the membership criteria for IPC.  In order to attract a broad base of membership, the IPC needs to engage with the IP community (broadly defined) so that the community is aware of us, our role in developing Internet policy, and the importance of membership in the IPC.
  • Supports the IPC’s General Goals, in particular:
    • Increase the geographic regions represented;
    • Improve engagement with existing members.
  • Supports the IPC’s Specific Goals:
    • Improving geographic diversity, particularly from the Africa region
    • Improving Engagement by assisting in demystifying ICANN and re-engaging existing but less active members

I am a recent member of the IPC, having attended the Johannesburg meeting in 2017 as an ICANN Fellow.  I would like to be more involved with the IPC and I believe that there are real benefits to being able to attend a meeting in person in order to participate in the sessions and to meet members of the community, both within the IPC and Commercial Stakeholder Group and more widely.  This will allow me to improve my knowledge and understanding of important internet policy topics such as GDPR/WHOIS, thereby giving me the confidence to participate more actively within the IPC and to bring the perspective from my country and region.

I would also hope to be able to share my improved understanding by helping to demystifying ICANN for members of my law firm, and others within my business and legal community.
