PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW?

The Registration Directory Service Review, formerly known as "WHOIS" (RDS-WHOIS2) is mandated by ICANN Bylaws Section 4.6(e) to assess the effectiveness of the then current gTLD registry directory service and whether its implementation meets the legitimate needs of law enforcement, promoting consumer trust and safeguarding registrant data.

Board action on Registration Directory Service Review (RDS-WHOIS2) Final Report and Recommendations

On 25 February 2020, the Board took action on each of the 22 recommendations issued within the RDS-WHOIS2-RT Final Report, as specified within the scorecard titled "Final RDS-WHOIS2 Recommendations – Board Action 25 February 2020". The Board resolved to approve 15 recommendations (in whole or in part), to put 4 recommendations in pending, to pass through 2 recommendations (in whole or in part), and to reject 2 recommendations. Registration Directory Service (RDS-WHOIS2) Review Team Final Report Published For Public Comment

Per the ICANN Bylaws, each final report of a review team shall be published for Public Comment in advance of the Board's consideration. The Public Comment process on the Final Report was started on 8 October 2019 and is expected to close on 25 November  2019. To review the Final Report and provide your feedback, click here.

On 3 September 2019, Alan Greenberg, chair of the RDS-WHOIS2 Review team, sent the Final Report and Recommendations for submission to the ICANN Board of Directors. More details here.
