In December 2014 AFRALO focused on the following activities:

AFRALO participation on Review of the ICANN African strategy in Mauritius

AFRALO was represented during the review of the ICANN Africa Strategy in Mauritius. Aziz Hilali, Barrack Otieno and Tijani Ben Jamaa were involved.

The objective of the meeting was  to review the current Africa Strategy and realign it to the new ICANN FY16-FY20  Strategic plan. The result is the attached Draft 0 of the Africa Strategic Plan Ver 2.0 (2016 - 2020).  Report on the Africa Regional At Large Leadership (AFRALO) Training At The Africa Network Information Centre

The AFRALO leadership comprised of Aziz Hilali Chairperson, Barrack Otieno Secretary and Tijani Ben Jamaa, ALAC Vice Chair attended the AFRINIC 21 Meeting  held from 21st November 2014 to 28th November2014.
This training was organized under the framework of cooperation between the Africa Network Information Centre and the Africa Regional At large
Organization.
The AFRALO leaders attended AFRINICs INRM training http://training.afrinic.net/index.php/en/learn-modules-2/for-managers.
The objective of the training was to enable AFRALO's leadership understand and appreciate the role of the regional internet registry.
After the training sessions AFRALO leadership was taken on a tour of AfriNIC offices at Raffles towers after which they had a full session
with the head of membership services Arthur Nguessan. Session With AFRINIC Head of Members Services Arthur Nguessan.
AFRALO leadership led by Chairman Aziz Hilali, ALAC Vice Chair, Tijani Ben Jamaa and Secretary Barrack Otieno had a training session with
AFRINIC's head of member services Arthur Nguessan. During the Session Mr. Nguessan explained to AFRALO's leadership how the Africa Network
Information Centre operates with respect to serving the Internet Community in Africa. Mr. Nguessan outlined the role of the Africa
Regional At Large Organization in educating Internet Users on AfRINICs policy developement process. This is crucial in enabling users who are
an important constituency participate in the Africa Networrk Information Centre Community. Mr Nguessan noted that it had been six
years since Afrinics policy was last updated. He reiterated that there was need for the African community to be actively engaged in the
Regional Internet Registries Policy developement and that AFRALO was a very important vehicle for the African Internet Community as a
representative of Internet Users.

Cross-Community Working Group (CWG)

AFRALO has actively contributed to the work of the Cross Community Working group  through its representatives Seun and Tijani Ben Jamaa. Initial output of the working group is expected on or before the ICANN meeting in Singapore. Accountability has been a major discussion point in the working groups deliberation.

AFRALO Webinar: Transition of US Government Stewardship of the IANA Function

AFRALO successfully held a Webinar on the transition of the US governments oversight on the IANA function. The Webinar brought together representatives of the ICG and ccWG as well as staff and members of AFRALO to update them as well as bring them up to speed on the key issues being discussed in the respective working groups. The Webinar was very productive.

 AFRALO Task force: Outreach for more African representation in ICANN leadership positions

The taskforce has already completed a Strategy document that will guide outreach efforts which will encourage more Africans to apply for leadership  positions within ICANN. The Strategy document has been approved by the AFRALO leadership and posted on a wiki on the AFRALO dashboard. Members of the taskforce have been mandated to implement the Strategy.

Revision of AFRALO Operating Principles

The AFRALO ROP working group has been holding meetings. The team has developed a revised draft rules of Procedure document which is available on the Wiki for review.

Joint Meeting AFRALO / AfrICANN at ICANN 52

AFRALO members formed a working group to deliberate on the joint statement for the AFRALO/AfriCANN meeting in  Singapore. Members unanimously agreed that the statement should focus on Accountability. It was further agreed that members await feedback from ccWG meeting in Frankfurt before drafting the joint statement. A wiki was created for this purpose.

New ALS Applications :

ISOC GAMBIA, Gambia,

Cameroon League for Development

Members agreed to drop the two new ALS applications since they had not been able to fullfill all the required Criteria to be confirmed as At Large Structures.

AFRALO REPORT NOVEMBER 2014

 

The monthly AFRALO meeting was held on Wednesday 5th November 2014. The meeting focused on the following areas:

 

        i.      ICANN 51 Report

AFRALO participated in the ICANN 51 meeting in Los Angeles California. During the meeting Philip Johnson completed his term as Secretary and Barrack Otieno assumed the same position.  AFRALO was active in the ALAC sessions as well as the ICG sessions where it was represented by Mohamed El Bashir the Vice Chair.

        ii.    Joint Meeting AFRALO/AfrICANN at ICANN 51

During the ICANN 51 Meeting AFRALO participated in the ICANN Africa information session as well as the joint AFRALO /AfriCANN meeting. The AFRALO AFRICANN declaration was presented during the meeting. It was agreed that the declaration be sent to ICANN's board as well as to the IGC.

        iii.   Community Roundtable for ALAC/RALO Chairs and ICANN's

During the ICANN 51 meeting a Community Roundtable was held which brought together the

CEO and ICANN's Global Executives the AFRALO Chair participated in the meeting.

        iv.   IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (ICG)

During the meeting Mohamed El Bashir gave an update on the progress made by the IANA transition working group. It was agreed that there was need for AFRALO members to be educated on the IANA transition and the issues at stake. It was also agreed that   a Webinar on the Transition of US of the Government Stewardship of the IANA Function (step by step presentationexplaining the consequences on the DN management, should be held in December.

        v.    Cross-Community Working Group (CWG)

Seun gave an update on the progress made by the Cross Community working group and encouraged more members to follow and participate in the activities.

        vi.   Task force "Outreach for more African representation in ICANN leadership positions.

Fatimata gave an update on the progress made by the taskforce. The Strategy document has been circulated to AFRALO members for validation before the leadership can approve its implementation.

      vii. Community Regional Outreach Pilot Project (CROPP))

Members were informed that AFRALO Chair Aziz, Secretary Barrack Otieno and ALAC Vice Chair Tijani would be attending AFRINIC 21 under the framework of cooperation between AFRALO and AFRINIC. A Schedule of activities had already been planned in partnership with AFRINIC. The visit would include training and orientation on AFRINIC's operation.

The objective is to strengthen the partnership between AFRALO and AFRINIC.

 Review of the AFRALO operating Principles

Tijani gave an update on the progress made by the ROP working group to the members.

New ALS Applications

-      ISOC GAMBIA, Gambia- application suspended

-      Cameroon League for Development- Regional Advice expected. Nathalie Peregrine to ask again the ALS  Cameroon League for Development so that they answer question by AFRALO.

It was agreed that Nathalie Peregrine would send  POSITIVE Regional Advice to ALAC regarding the following:

Digital Sense Africa Media, Nigeria- Regional Advice - Regional Advice Positive

 ISOC South Africa Gauteng Chapter, South Africa- Regional Advice Positive

It was also agreed that  Nathalie Peregrine will  wait for ISOC Rwanda to send their Constitution documents . As soon as this is received AFRALO will issue a positive Regional Advice.

AFRALO ACTIVITY REPORT (September & October 2014) [English]

  • AFRALO to make a request to AFRINIC to request access to request data/statistics with regards to Africa.

PREPARATION FOR AFRALO ACTIVITIES AT ICANN 50 AND ATLAS II IN LONDON

A call for participation was luanched to ALSes to contribute to one of the 5 thematic topics, which will be discussed within a series of breakout sessions during the ATLAS II summit. Below are the five thematic topics;

  3. Global Internet: The User Perspective
  4. ICANN Transparency and Accountability
  5. At-Large Community Engagement in ICANN

Activities held during the month of April for the preparation of the ATLAS II are as follows

CAPACITY BUILDING WEBNARS FOR ATLAS II

AFRALO ALSes joined other At Large Structures  in a series of Pre-Webinars  intended to build their capacities to particpate in the ATLAS II Summit. So far, ALSes participated in four Sessions.

 

PRAPARATION FOR AFRALO GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT ICANN 50

A request  for selection of a theme and Agenda for AFRALO General Assebmy was lanched to all AFRALO ALSes.  Following the call for topics, theme to be discussed the following suggestion were take into consideration see wiki:

Community Regional Outreach Pilot Project régional (Community Regional Outreach Pilot Project (CROPP)

Monthly activities in April were also concentrated on the preparation of the submission form for the CROPP programme for candidates from Africa, so far two applications have been been submitted and one was approved by the CROPP review team members.

-       Les ALSes d’AFRALO ont rejoint les autres Structures dans une série de pré-séminaires destinés au renforcement de capacités à participer au deuxième sommet ATLAS.

Jusqu'ici, les ALSes ont participé à quatre Sessions de Renforcement de capacités ATLAS II - voir la liste complète de tous les webinaires.

Préparation de l’Assemblée générale d’AFRALO à ATLAS II

Une demande du choix du thème et de l’ordre du jour pour l’Assemblée Générale d’AFRALO a été lancée auprès toutes les ALSes d’AFRALO. L'appel à thèmes a donné lieu à la suggestion suivante publiée sur le wiki:

CROPP (Projet Pilote de la Communauté Régionale (CROPP)  (Community Regional Outreach Pilot Project (CROPP)

Les Activités mensuelles du mois d’avril ont concerné aussi la préparation du formulaire de soumission du programme CROPP pour les candidats de la région. Jusqu'à présent deux demandes ont été soumis et un a été approuvé par les membres de l'équipe de révision du CROPP.
