Trip Assessment Form

1) Describe the Trip in sufficient detail
that an interested reader could understand if/how
the original purpose(s) and outcome(s) were
realized (please be as expansive as possible):

The goals of attending this conference are to outreach and engage with a new set of potential contributors to the ICANN. The attendees hail from a diverse spectrum across the sustainability and innovation. This event is one of the top non-profit technology conferences in the US. It offers numerous outreach opportunities to introduce people to NARALO and to ICANN. We see a great opportunity to meet US-based nonprofits from various parts of the underrepresented parts of the US at the conference. One of the main focus of NARALO is to reach out to areas of the country where we have no current ALSes and also to reach out and engage with groups who have historically been overlooked by ICANN, such as people with disabilities and specific needs, indigenous groups, and other non-engaged groups. I hope to try and engage with them and encourage them to learn about ICANN, AT LARGE and NARALO. Our goal here is to increase their understanding and encourage them to get involved and advocate for their interests within ICANN. We also plan on educating them on how their organization can become an ALS, how we can help them amplify their voice and advocate for their members.

The purpose of the trip was to engage with the NTEN community and staff in building awareness of NARALO, ICANN and in general Internet governance and domain security and engagement issues.

During these conference and at the social events in the conference I interacted with attendees on trends and issues pertinent to ICANN and its mission. I distributed about 50-75 NARALO Mail cards as well as about 25 ALAC Brochures.  Unlike some other conferences there was not a table to put information on so I had to just hand then out to people I met.   People seemed to be interested in these sessions and I took their cards and sent them info about NARALO.  I also handed out the mailcards and people said they would follow up.

2) Describe the details of your attendance
and
activities at the meeting (including sessions
attended, written or oral contributions made to
specific sessions, etc.):

My workshop was on Internet Governance and talked about the history of It, explained about the different constituencies within ICANN and their functions, the concept of multistakeholderism,  anatomy of a domain and GTLDs, Universal Acceptance and the imapct on non-profits, and other tips for securing and protecting domains. My colleague Debra Social talked about data security and protection for non-profits.

Many people at the conference had not idea about ICANN and about Internet Governance so promotion was essential.  People are very interested in Data Security and there are multiple sessions on this topic. People in my session were engaged and asked questions about ICANN, about the Who Is Process, about GTLDs, about Internet Governance.

I had put out flyers for every person who came to the sessions and discussed after the session about ICANN, At Large and other constituencies.

Presentations can be found here, https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jNw6j3_ZS3wslRpbANOQjGXqEOC0nYuJuEs-1TFmH_I/edit

Each session has a collaborative document where speakers post all info and any resource, I would suggest positing some info about At Large, some of our intro e-books and other helpful topics and resources.

Next year the conference will be in Baltimore so perhaps ICANN GSE could go up and present or do a demo.

On the sessions I attended I asked questions related to data security, inclusivenessm diversity and the different tactics people use to get volunteers enagaged and involved.

Here are the pictures of the workshop.  If we had better room placement, ie, not down a service corridor we would have had more people, However each of the 20-25 people who came were very committed as it was hard to find the room and they asked many questions.

Some people had no idea about Internet Governance, others knew but had no idea about Universal Acceptance and the impact it has on Non-Profits who are interested in domains longer than 3 characters. Other questions were on GTLDs and about history of ICANN. Some of the questions related to EPDP as companies were marketing expensive proxy services whereas these might no longer be needed.

People commented on how good it was to have a mailcard that had all the info they needed about the session and about ICANN At Large

3) Explain the specific plans for follow-up activities
to enhance and continue the objectives of the trip for
the community structure through which you were
approved for the trip:

Next year they will be in Baltimore so perhaps ICANN GSE could go up and present or do a demo or possibly pay and staff a booth there.

I sent people emails who  I met and gave the mail cards and told people houw to find out more info and to get involved.

The presentations are up on a collaborative space and we could put additional materials there as a resource to people looking up this info, such as how to get involved, Who Is Phase 1 report, how ICANN makes Policy, how to join NARALO
