Trip/Event Assessment Form

1) Describe the Trip/Event in sufficient detail
that an interested reader could understand Who,
What, When, Where, and Why concerning this
funded CROPP activity (please be as expansive
as possible):

An opportunity arose in Johannesburg South Africa for an outbound IPC outreach following the proposed presentation on 23 February 2017 of an advanced ADR workshop by the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL). This committee presents advanced ADR Workshops every two years, focusing on the substantive and procedural legal issues influencing local and international domain name decisions and procedures.  The workshops are typically attended by both senior and junior intellectual property lawyers and academics.

The focus of the 2017 workshop was ICANN's structure and activities, with particular emphasis on the work done by the IPC, recent developments at ICANN and in particular also ICANN’s proposed policy development process to review all the Rights Protection Mechanisms in all gTLD’s and an overview of the UDRP and URS. The speaker list was to include 2-3 local experts and an international speaker.  The proposed workshop presented a good opportunity to do IPC outreach in a territory where the IPC had very little representation, particularly ahead of ICANN 59 in Johannesburg.

2) Explain the extent to which the Proposed
Goals and Outcomes were accomplished
(see above LINK to review the original Proposal):

The ADR workshop on 23 February was a success. David Taylor and Charne le Roux addressed the meeting on the work that the IPC is doing, referencing the review of the ongoing RPMs and the importance of African IP practitioners getting involved. A copy of the agenda with the topics under discussion that day will be sent via email to CROPP staff. The IPC one pagers were also handed out to all the attendees. The workshop sensitised IP practitioners and academics to the critical IP issues that need to be addressed at ICANN on a continuous basis. There is an expectation that a good South African contingent will attend ICANN 59 in Johannesburg.

Approximately 52 people attended the workshop and an attendance list will be sent via email to CROPP staff, that may be used by the IPC to do specific outreach for the Jhb meeting. A schedule with contact details of most of the IP firms in Johannesburg as well as the larger IP law firms in the South African Development Community, to be included for outreach ahead of the Jhb meeting, was also obtained and will be communicated via email to CROPP staff.
