At-Large Comment on SAC105

No Statement

As per 24 July CPWG AI, this is an informal At-Large workspace on the topic.

As per the 27 August ALAC Call, Olivier Crepin-Leblond noted: "The matter was discussed on the ALAC call of 27 August 2019. Andrei Kolesnikov, ALAC Liaison to the SSAC, mentioned that SAC105 was not a Statement as such that required any action from SOs and ACs. The purpose of SAC105 is purely informational and doe not require any response from anyone. Thus it was felt that the ALAC did not need to comment on this topic. Perhaps, as an alternative a note from the ALAC Chair to the SSAC Chair congratulating the SSAC for its excellent document SAC105, would be a nice way forward. The ALAC should also bear in mind the existence of this document, to be used in future ICANN Strategic Planning discussions."

FINAL VERSION SUBMITTED (IF RATIFIED)

The final version to be submitted, if the draft is ratified, will be placed here by upon completion of the vote.

FINAL DRAFT VERSION TO BE VOTED UPON BY THE ALAC

The final draft version to be voted upon by the ALAC will be placed here before the vote is to begin.

DRAFT SUBMITTED FOR DISCUSSION

The first draft submitted will be placed here before the call for comments begins. The Draft should be preceded by the name of the person submitting the draft and the date/time. If, during the discussion, the draft is revised, the older version(S) should be left in place and the new version along with a header line identifying the drafter and date/time should be placed above the older version(s), separated by a Horizontal Rule (available + Insert More Content control).

NOTE from Olivier C-L: This is not a "draft" as such, but a starting point for our discussions.

In my opinion SAC105 is a very good background paper regarding the DNS and the Internet of Things (IoT)

It touches on Technical Issues, how IoT deployments use the DNS. It explains DoH and DoT, opportunities for the DNS to protect the physical world and increase IoT transparency, Risks to the DNS from the IoT and Challenges for the DNS and IoT industries.

It does so very rigorously and competently and I do not think that there is anything in this paper that our community could disagree with as the bulk of the paper is based on factual data.

The challenge comes to its use by the ICANN Board. Historically, it has happened in the past, that very pertinent SSAC Advice was overlooked by the Board. As mentioned in its introduction, unlike typical SSAC publications, the aim of this report is to trigger and facilitate dialogue in the broader ICANN community.

Should the ALAC decide to issue a recommendation, then I could suggest that the ALAC recommend that the ICANN Strategic Process makes use of this publication SAC105 in its deliberations regarding its approach to IoT, whether it sees IoT as a Thread, an Opportunity, or a world that is parallel and independent of ICANN.
