Results from the Re-arranging the ICANN Organizational Chart Exercise:

Group 1

Overall statement: The current structure works, so there is no need to make fundamental changes. However, improvements can be made in the following areas to improve clarity of purpose and processes:

  • Increase the number of At-Large seats to the ICANN Board from 1 to 2.
  • Add liaisons from the technical community to other groups, where currently not present.
  • Rearrange current ICANN regional categories by increasing the number to 6, specifically tacking the Asia Pacific region, which currently is confusing and includes over 50 countries.
  • Arrange the work by topic area and/or expert Working Groups so that people can engage in issue-specific groups.
  • Simplify the names of groups across ICANN from, e.g., NCUC or At-Large to Civil Society, etc.

Group 2

  • The group supports ICANN to continue as a global private not-for-profit corporation
  • The current organizational structure works - problems are not related to structure
  • ICANN must continue to keep the GAC engaged
  • There needs to be more discipline in workload management and prioritization to enable the GAC (and other stakeholder groups) to provide timely input to policy development and to avoid relitigation of closed issues
