Phase 4Phase UpdateICANN sent a letter (https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/olive-to-osborn-13oct23-en.pdf) to the RSSAC regarding this Advice item.

Phase 4Phase UpdateICANN sent the RSSAC028 Implementation study report to the RSSAC. (https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/rssac028-implementation-study-report-27sep23-en.pdf).

Phase 4Phase Update
The Final Report is ready and will be shared with RSSAC within the coming weeks.

Phase 4Phase Update
Implementation is in progress. Expected to be complete by Sept 2023.

Phase 4Phase Update
  • RSSAC Staff R-2 is tracked as a project. The contractor (Nlnet Labs) has started working on the research in September and this work is expected to be done in August 2023. Work is progressing as planned.

Phase 4Phase UpdateICANN org hired a contractor in September 2022 to write a study analyzing the questions in Recommendation 2 of RSSAC028. This work is anticipated to be complete in August 2023. Tasks of the contractor include: surveying root server operators (“RSOs”) about which software they use to provide authoritative service for the root zone, performing the study using the open source “Resolver Testbed” software already created by ICANN org, and repeating the analysis that led to Appendix A of RSSAC028 using the current software in use by the RSOs.

Phase 4Phase ChangeNow in Phase 4: Implement

Phase 3Phase UpdateOn 25 March 2021 the ICANN Board considered 2021.03.25.02 (https://www.icann.org/en/board-activities-and-meetings/materials/approved-resolutions-regular-meeting-of-the-icann-board-25-03-2021-en)and the Board accepts Recommendation 2, relating to conducting a study to understand the current behavior of DNS resolvers and how each naming scheme discussed in this document would affect these behaviors, and directs the ICANN President and CEO, or designee(s), to commence such a study. This item is now in Phase 4 | Implement as of 25 March 2021.

Phase 3Phase ChangeNow in Phase 3: Evaluate & Consider

Phase 2AP FeedbackReceived confirmation of understanding. RSSAC states: The RSSAC / RSSAC Caucus will scope the study. After that collaboration may be needed between the RSSAC / RSSAC Caucus and ICANN org to perform the studies.

Phase 2Board UnderstandingThe ICANN org understands RSSAC028 Recommendation 2 to mean that studies on current behaviors of DNS software and DNS resolvers should be conducted to understand different elements of root server responses to queries, both individually and in combination; for initial priming and standard responses; and for how well specific implementations, such as the DO bit are interpreted by root servers and the DNS software. The ICANN org requests clarification from the RSSAC as to whether the RSSAC is recommending the RSSAC/root server community or the ICANN org to perform the studies.

Phase 2Phase UpdateUnderstanding sent to RSSAC for review.
