Trip Assessment Form

1) Describe the Trip in sufficient detail
that an interested reader could understand if/how
the original purpose(s) and outcome(s) were
realized (please be as expansive as possible):

I am submitting this report for the second time since it was not saved in the wiki when submitting it around 20. November 2018, when memories where still fresh. With this report I am doing my best to recap all activities undertaken at ICANN63 in Barcelona.
I was funded for 3 nights / 4 days, from 21-24 October 2018, but some of my activities would not have been possible when departing on 24. October (for instance EURALO General Assembly, European Stakeholder Networking Session, Community Recognition, Public Forum, 20 years Anniversary). I stayed 2 more night on my own costs. For future beneficiaries of such programmes it should be considered to fund the attendance of the full meeting – that seems more effective since the trip is paid anyway.

The purpose of the trip was to assist EURALO in its outreach to participants at ICANN63 including:

  • actively helping out with joint NCUC-At-Large Outreach Session
  • helping out with the Fellows as well as other At-Large activity at the booth
  • reaching out to newcomers at the ICANN meeting
  • explaining the complex ICANN and At-Large ecosystem to newcomers
  • helping out with the EURALO Virtual General Assembly
  • Activities regarding the ICANN Academy

Besides these activities and since I was still a member of the 2018 Nominating outgoing committee until the end of the meeting, I contributed to the recommendations for the incoming NomCom. In this respect a session was organised on Sunday and I had various individual talks with NomCom members that where interested in my experiences.

The focus of my activities was related to the ICANN Academy programmes and outreach activities within Europe and EURALO.

2) Describe the details of your attendance
and
activities at the meeting (including sessions
attended, written or oral contributions made to
specific sessions, etc.):

During the meeting I visited various stakeholder groups to explain and answer questions regarding the upcoming programmes of the ICANN Academy working group namely the Leadership Programme (LP see: https://community.icann.org/display/LTP/Leadership+Program) and the Chairing Skills Programme (CSP see: https://community.icann.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=62395123). The groups I met with included inter alia the NomCom, ISP, ALAC, NPOC. Besides this I reached out to individuals from other groups and discussed with dedicated ICANN Staff the way forward and next steps. Aim of theses cross community programmes, that will be organised during the next meeting at ICANN64 in Kobe, are to achieve good ICANN stakeholder representation in order to better connect various groups with each other. The registration is closed meanwhile and proofs that this aim was met.

Sessions I attended and contributed to included:

  • NCUC-At-Large Outreach Session (partly)
  • High Level Governmental meeting (partly)
  • ICANN 5-Year Strategic Planning
  • EURALO General Assembly,
  • European Stakeholder Networking Session,
  • SEEDIG Update
  • Community Recognition,
  • Public Forum

Bilateral meetings I organised at the At Large Booth to be present for fellows’ requests and questions. Apart from that I engaged with a number of fellows during the breaks, socials and beyond the meeting. Some of them became part of the YOUthDIG programme committee which is the youth programme to EuroDIG – the European IGF – of which I am serving as the Secretariat. ICANN is a Partner Organisation to EuroDIG. An MoU was signed in 2015.

3) Explain the specific plans for follow-up activities
to enhance and continue the objectives of the trip for
the community structure through which you were
approved for the trip:

A direct follow up from this meeting will be the activities during the next meeting where the LP and the CSP are taking place. The Leadership Programme is meanwhile a well-recognised community effort that helps incoming as well as experienced ICANN leaders to connect, fosters peer learning and provides tools and methodologies for effective leadership. It is the 6th edition in a row

The Chairing Skills Programme has a focus on effective chairing of meetings, since this was identified as the biggest obstacle for inefficiency. It is the second edition and we are still in experimenting modus, learning from the first edition.

With the two projects that I am leading the European Summer School on Internet Governance (EuroSSIG see: www.eurossig.eu) and the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG see www.eurodig.org) I continue to provide capacity building in particular for ICANNs next generation. Numerous community leaders found their way to ICANN through one of these programmes or have enhanced their skills and knowledge here.
