1) Describe how the original Purpose and Goals were accomplished: | The original purpose and goal of the trip was civil society outreach, to raise awareness of ICANN issues and processes (and particularly civil society involvement) among a group already familiar and engaged with internet rights and Internet governance processes. This was accomplished in the natural course of events by participation in discussions and debates (both formally and informally) and networking with participants. |
2) Describe how the original Outcomes were achieved:
| The desired outcome was regionally focussed outreach, and this was achieved by discussion of a range of ICANN related issues with other participants both formally and informally. I participated in the Manila Principles working group over two days, which resulted in the completed Manila Principles for Intermediary Liability. As domain name registrars and registries are intermediaries, these principles have significant relevance to ICANN policy work, and a standardised set of civil society principles will not only be a useful tool for helping form civil society positions on relevant policy issues as they arise at ICANN, but will also be a useful bridge into ICANN policy work from other areas. This also proved a useful outreach opportunity for discussion of issues with regional groups such as OpenNet Korea. I was also present at an invitation meeting at which a new civil society network related to data retention and internet registration legislation was formed (now formalised as SC-CADRE), which has some relevance to civil society privacy concerns at ICANN. Several individuals present at the conference also showed interest in participating in specific ICANN related processes, such as the PPSAI working group, and ICANN/IETF processes for reserving domain names for special purposes such as Tor protocols.

I included positive outcomes for this event in the report, as this proved extremely relevant to ICANN policy work. |
