10) Purpose and Goals:

Speaking role to create awareness about ICANN and the BC and networking involving distribution of BC Newsletters. Goals: 1. Foster the realization of ICANN Strategic objective focused on global awareness and engagement – Internationalisation 2. Grow participation in BC policy work through membership development 3. Strengthen regional stakeholder engagement and thus enrich the ICANN bottom-up, consensus driven, multi-stakeholder governance model This is an event aimed at removing bottlenecks to affordable access experienced by a wider percentage of Africans. It promotes fair and competitiveness in the Internet space for which ICANN is the underlining engine. It helps to foster the realization of ICANN Strategic objective focused on global awareness and engagement. Though ICANN work is crucial to the openness and sustainability of the Internet as we know it, yet it’s mostly unknown. This event will thus move ICANN closer to the minds of stakeholders at the bottom of the Pyramid. Indeed, affordable Access is not just a matter of connecting people at the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ with the cheapest devices and lowest price/quality connectivity. African connectivity is expensive in relation to income and in relation to global ‘like for like’ price comparisons. Businesses and business people in Africa do not want basic services, they want effective services at affordable rates and many of the answers lie within the Continent. A coordinated and concerted effort by Policy Makers, Service Providers, Investors, Solution Providers and Major End Users will move Africa towards the goal of making Access Affordable, bringing all of the associated Socio Economic benefits.

11) Proposed Outcomes:Identify potential BC members from the African Region and establish follow up methods to keep engaged and participatory Strengthened relationship with Regional stakeholders and understanding of goals specific to the BC community
