The meeting minutes of the previous meeting were accepted and D Kasole was designated Chair of the meeting.
A discussion was held on the AFRALO secretariat election. D Kasole asked why the acceptation period for the AFRALO secretariat position should be extended.
The Staff specified that according to the original email, the election process only covered the open seat in the ALAC as there was no call for nominations for the AFRALO Secretariat position. However, during nomination period for the ALAC position, D Kasole and A Levine were nominated for this position. As there seemed to be an implicit understanding among the AFRALO community that there would be an ongoing Secretariat election, the staff expressed the view that A Levine should be contacted before assuming that he did not accept his nomination.
It was decided, however, that the acceptation period for the AFRALO Secretariat position ended on the same day as the acceptation period for the ALAC position. As the candidature remains unchallenged, D Kasole can therefore be confirmed as AFRALO Secretariat. Congratulations Didier!
The staff informed about the public consultation on the regional NomCom nominations. One of the discussed issues concerns the role that the residence of the candidates should play in the nomination process. The AFRALO Secretariat will send an email about this public consultation to the internal AFRALO list and will submit a public comment in case that views on the matter are expressed on the mailing list.
The staff further informed the participants that soon there would be an automated list translation machine for the AFRALO lists.
There was a short discussion on the next AFRALO teleconference. D Kasole said that he would like to have a conference for the AFRALO participants present in Cairo with the possibility for remote participation. He will assume the leadership in this effort.
