I think there’s a difference related to the context of the chat: business or family and friends
16:28:23 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
offcourse Zeina
16:28:41 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
here we are discussing in context to ICANN meetings
16:28:46 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
before and after
16:29:12 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
le plus important dans une culture c'est d'avoir des liens familiaux, et sociaux. L'ICANN nous permis d'avoir le lien numérique. Le CORONA virus nous a forcé à passer seulement au lien électronique dans la communité ICANN
16:30:05 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
well quite difficult for us Sarah since we hug, kiss, as a hi to any to is introduced to us, or just shake hands if is not so well known person ... after covid ,, would we change ? I believe not...
16:30:14 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
+1 Aicha
16:30:26 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
<Comment> In Puerto Rico (Latin culture) we normally kiss, hug, shake hands… that all stopped with Covid. Now a we as we open up after relatively successful pandemic management and high vaccination, we don’t even know how to engage among ourselves. We don’t know if it’s a wave from afar or a fistbump or what. I can imagine how difficult finding an new normal will be interculturally and transnationals.
16:30:55 From Shah Zahidur Rahman to Everyone:
we in generally ask how is it family not much details wife/children..but he's if friends knows much details individual
16:31:10 From Lilian Ivette De Lque to Everyone:
the covid changes our relationship
16:31:27 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
we are open now in n the state I live so we are back to hugs and kisses .....
16:31:37 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
(Excuse typos)
16:31:50 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
We just need to learn how to live with this pandemy
16:32:09 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
guess this is the idea of this meeting...
16:32:13 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Covid-19 conditions may change our communications tools, but we still have to work o and operate with our better communications ...
16:32:28 From Bill Jouris to Everyone:
The biggest challenge, I find, it distance. In some cultures, people stand a couple of meters apart when talking; they talk when standing closer only with immediate family. In others, people normally stand much closer.
16:32:32 From Priyatosh Jana to Everyone:
we usually ask about how is their family not more details about extended family.
16:33:12 From Lilian Ivette De Lque to Everyone:
my dial out is gone, please call me again
16:33:31 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
how many of you have found working with masks obscuring full faces has effected your common ways of approach and recognition... practice makes perfect in many things, including good communications
16:33:45 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
The world has known m at O0 great
16:33:49 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
Agree Cheryl
16:34:05 From Shah Zahidur Rahman to Everyone:
@vanda, sounds good, hope hug and kisses will resume again soon broadly
16:34:17 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
the main thing in culture is to have ties, family, social ties. ICANN gave us the opportunity for a multiculture but COVID forced us to have a virtual connection only with webinars
16:35:02 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
@CLO one thing I have noticed is how much the eyes have to do with face recognition and emotions-!
16:36:08 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Indeed @Javier, bit not all cultures engage eyes with each other the same way so we need to learn new tolerances etc., in some cases
16:36:17 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
but not bit
16:36:28 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
I always felt that during the ICANN meetings were really in a multicultural community
16:37:07 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
As it should be @Aïcha
16:37:40 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
That is wise in many cultures to take something when offered politeness *always* helps
16:39:04 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
Totally agree @ CLO. I just mean within my culture- It’s just the incredible thing that it is discovering or realizing things about ones own culture that we’re always there but just not apparent!
16:39:08 From Hadia El Miniawi to Everyone:
Sandra we cannot hear you
16:39:10 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
@yes Cherly
16:39:15 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
Sandra you are muted
16:39:18 From David Mackey to Everyone:
Thank you for the responses.
16:39:30 From Bill Jouris to Everyone:
Not only is it expected that one will use Mr or Mrs, rather than just a first name, but it is very important in some cuturs to acknowledge that someone is a doctor (that is, has a PhD, not just a medical degree).
16:39:37 From Heidi Ullrich to Everyone:
Shall we go to Hadia?
16:39:44 From Raymond Mamattah to Everyone:
Sometimes if you are a kid and you greet how are you, they will ask you if I am not well can you take care of me? so yours is to greet good morning or good evening just as pastor Peters rightly said
16:40:15 From Hadia El Miniawi to Everyone:
yes sure
16:40:25 From Shah Zahidur Rahman to Everyone:
call by sir name flexible much thn sir
16:40:29 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
It's a shame that there isn't an African woman to talk about culture
16:40:49 From Hadia El Miniawi to Everyone:
We hear you well Amrita
16:41:00 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:

16:42:10 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
i love Amrita. That is well said
16:42:20 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Active listening *is* a communication, so an abundance of friendly/politnness often helps as well
16:42:53 From Gloria Issah to Everyone:

16:44:12 From Gloria Issah to Everyone:

Don't apply your own rules - know the culture of the people
16:46:28 From Gloria Issah to Everyone:
yes I was but later on i left for school
16:46:52 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
I always err on the side of caution as a start then work out as one develops the interchange *yes* even in a few minutes of small talk
16:47:12 From Hadia El Miniawi to Everyone:
authenticity matters
16:47:24 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
@ Chery .APRALO has a rich cultural diversity
16:47:39 From Gloria Issah to Everyone:
yes please I did
16:47:53 From avri doria to Everyone:
Are there sets of norms for multi-cultural events that differ from the siloed local cultural norms?
16:48:36 From Aïcha Abbad to Everyone:
Yes @Gloria
16:48:38 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:

16:53:07 From Marita Moll to Everyone:

16:54:42 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
small talk builds MANY bridges in negotiation(s) and consensus building in my experience...
16:54:51 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
Hi Amrita - nice presentations. i had a question about classes in India because I had really some difficulties facing some characteristics when in India and then with group of professional coming to work with me may be after the presentations you could talk about how to address person of different classes . appreciate
16:56:44 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
Hi Vanda sure - if it is a class you are teaching you can call by first name
16:57:19 From Amrita Choudhury to Everyone:
If its a group of professional working with you it can be first name. Very senior people ..with a Mr/ Ms with last name
16:57:27 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:

We all are coming from the Internet
17:01:17 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
;-)
17:01:22 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
<Comment> This whole intercultural conversation is quite relevant in other contexts. Think about so called “Universal Human Rights”. One clearly sees how different cultures interpret those, whether from individualistic or collectivist perspectives. Also on gender relations and sexuality matters. I wonder if there is a brightline somewhere where total cultural relativism is unacceptable on these matters.
17:01:24 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
What a delightful Video Clare! you have enriched my day with this THANK YOU!
17:02:23 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:

17:17:19 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Bye Greg
17:18:05 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
<Comment> Lilian is spot on. My culture/ethnicity in Puerto Rico (Caribbean Latin) is very very similar to Lilian’s in Northern Colombia- there is a cultural affinity in the Latin Caribbean -say Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Northern (coastal) Venezuela & Colombia. All have important divergences and idioms. But there is an affinity for sure. Puerto Rico is if course a bit more impacted by anglo US culture given our political association to the USA. And soccer not huge here. We are Basketball and Baseball country!
17:18:11 From Augusto Ho to Everyone:
Thanks Lilian, good work
17:18:11 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
good Lilian...

I think in NARALO we all have to learn a lot from Canadians!
17:23:44 From David Mackey to Everyone:
+1 Marita - a good Canadian is always complaining about the weather, eh!
17:24:35 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
Puerto Rico Soccer is not a big thing actually!
17:26:33 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
<comment>Il faut s'adaper aux coutumes locales et aus usages de l'époque. Il faut respecter les coutumes, traditions et normes lactuelles de chaque pays et région</comment>
17:26:36 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Thank you @Marita an excellent overview, and good focus on our needs to learn and practice some of these important and essential communication(s) skills...
17:26:57 From Yrjo Lansipuro to Everyone:
@Marita Weather is a good opening topic in Finland, too. Just remember that an abundance of snow is seen as a good thing here
17:27:21 From Olévié Kouami to Everyone:
Avoir un comportement flexible.
17:27:24 From Javier Rúa-Jovet to Everyone:
Soccer was consciously discouraged under the initial years of US rule (1898-1910) to Americanize the island. US forces succeeded in almost stamping soccer out in PR. It has definitely made a comeback in last 20 years, but still small compared to baseball and basketball.
17:27:36 From Vanda Scartezini to Everyone:
well. Javier .. i believe like our players they move for another country- europe normally from here... still have good one running
17:27:45 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
