Moderator: Hadia ElMiniawi

Description:

The session will be composed of three round tables with time given during each of the round tables for interactive discussions with the attendees. The first-round table will discuss the rights/interests of end-users as incorporated in ICANN Bylaws and explore how the At-Large community attempts to identify those interests. In addition, it will highlight how considering those interests are important for a secure and stable DNS. The second-round table will shed light on the rights of registrants and show how protecting those rights is important for a stable DNS ecosystem. Finally, the third-round table will briefly discuss current policies under development and show how upholding rights of registrants and end users is important to maintain a healthy DNS ecosystem.

Objectives:

The objective of the session is to shed light on the rights of registrants and end users and the importance of those rights to maintain a stable and secure DNS

Presenters/Panel: 

  • ICANN org: to speak about the importance of protecting end users and registrants’ rights in maintaining a secure and stable DNS
  • gNSO & At-Large to speak about registrants' rights and end users interests.
  • ICANN Board: To speak about those rights as incorporated in ICANN Bylaws
  • Community members and leaders of current PDPs

Format:

Round Table 1:

Introduction: (1 min each)

Questions to be discussed:

Leon: According to ICANN Bylaws, how do end users participate in ICANN work? (3 min)

Sarah: Through At-Large the capable part of the user community can submit ideas and take positions. How can we define those positions? (3 min)

Jonathan: What are the means and tools that could help At-Large define Internet users interests based on which the At-Large user community can take certain positions? (3 min)

Pari: What is the importance of safe-guarding Internet users’ interests for a secure and known future Internet? (3 min)

General Question to all:  

With the understanding that rights are specific duties necessary to protect interests, is it possible/beneficial to translate Internet users’ interests as they relate to ICANN into rights?  (each 2 min)

Holly: Could you pick any ICANN policy that either has concluded or is still underdevelopment (examples could include any of the IDN policies currently under development, The EPDP for gTLD registration data or subsequent procedures for new gTLD rounds.) and discuss how the policy upholds the interests of users and registrants and the impact of this on the DNS ecosystem. (4 min)
