What are the Expert Working Group on gTLD Directory Services' current objectives and plans?
In June 2014, the EWG published its Final Report, detailing a complete replacement for WHOIS by a next generation Registration Directory Service (RDS).
The EWG's Final Report was submitted to ICANN's CEO & Board and will be explored at ICANN 50 in London during these sessions:
- An introduction to the Final Report: EWG Overview of Final Report, Monday, 23 June, 1515 – 1615
- Two cross-community discussion sessions:
- EWG Final Report Discussion Session, Monday, 23 June, 1700 - 1900
- EWG Final Report Discussion Session, Wednesday, 25 June, 0800 – 1000
This Final Report fulfills the ICANN Board's directive to help redefine the purpose and provision of gTLD registration data, and provides a foundation to help the ICANN community (through the GNSO) create a new global policy for gTLD directory services.
This report represents the culmination of an intense 15 month period of work during which this diverse group of volunteers created an alternative to today's WHOIS to better serve the global Internet community -- a next-generation Registration Directory Service (RDS).
The EWG looks forward to discussing this report with the ICANN community.

What are the Expert Working Group on gTLD Directory Services' current objectives and plans?
In November 2013, the EWG published a Status Update Report [PDF, 2.26 MB] that provides further insight into the EWG's analysis and highlights its current thoughts on key issues, after more extensive exploration of open areas and careful consideration of all Community comments received on its Initial Report. As the EWG's deliberations are on-going, it is hoped that this report will provide insight into the team's recommendations, answer questions, and stimulate lively Community dialogue.
In January 2014, the EWG entered a research and information-gathering phase. The EWG's Public Research Page summarizes and links to several research efforts that the EWG is undertaking to ensure that its final recommendations are supported by facts and informed by current practices.
The EWG plans to reconvene in March 2014 to complete its recommendations, informed by Community feedback and in-depth analysis of research topics, with the goal of delivering its final report to the ICANN Board in June 2014.
