The Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA) is a 5-day capacity development workshop focused on topics related to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and Internet governance. It is targeted at, but not limited to, undergraduate and graduate students from universities and tertiary educational institutions in South Korea and Asia Pacific. Anyone from the Asia Pacific region, interested in Internet governance issues and related international activities, and between the ages of 18 and 35, are welcome to participate.

Aim

The Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy serves to improve the participants’ understanding of Internet governance issues, and the multistakeholder processes that are largely responsible for driving these issues. Topics include History of Internet GovernanceFundamentals of Internet Infrastructure; and Multistakeholder Policy Making.

Through this program, participants will be able to form regional networks and contribute to the work of local, regional and global organizations involved in Internet governance work, such as the Korea Internet Governance Alliance (KIGA), Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC), Internet Society (ISOC), Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD) and ICANN. The participants will also be able to better understand the importance of participating in platforms such as the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) and UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF).

This academy, together with its cooperative mechanism involving ICANN and other regional partners, may also serve as a capacity-building model for replication in other economies and other regional localities.

Our objectives are as follows:

  • Help participants develop a proper understanding of the Internet by:
    • Building a solid technical foundation of how the Internet works.
    • Deepening participants’ understanding of the Internet ecosystem.
  • Enable participants to participate in Internet policymaking by:
    • Introducing the concept of Internet Governance, and the multistakeholder model of policy makingpolicymaking.
    • Helping participants identify and familiarize with global IG issues.
    • Enabling participants to apply issues at the local and regional levels.
    • Building confidence in participants to speak up in international fora.
  • Spark and develop interest in global Internet trends.
