LACRALO and UASG held a training Program in in late April 2021, this training program consisted of four sessions delivered from 4 to 25 May 2021 covering key topics such as email address internationalization, UA for Java developers, and how to engage in UA activities. Over 150 participants from 14 LAC countries volunteered in the training.
This was a joint effort between LACRALO, ICANN and UASG.
19:23:38 From Barrack Otieno to Everyone:
major
19:23:41 From Silvia Vivanco to Everyone:
The training was designed to increase UA awareness across the LAC region and engage with technical stakeholders directly.
19:24:10 From Barrack Otieno to Everyone:
Major challenge we are facing in Africa is articulating practical use cases from a local perspective
19:25:19 From Barrack Otieno to Everyone:
Once we crack this we should should be heading in the right direction.
19:25:52 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
@Barrack, I don't understand. How are the use cases not practical now?
19:26:17 From Silvia Vivanco to Everyone:
For more information on LACRALO's UA training program: https://www.icann.org/en/blogs/details/lacralo-universal-acceptance-program-successfully-concluded-1-6-2021-en
19:26:43 From Silvia Vivanco to Everyone:
And NARALO will launch the program next year by mid January
19:27:16 From Sarmad Hussain to Everyone:
APTLD recently published a white paper on UA: https://aptld.org/documents/working-papers/17880/ on the Role of ccTLDs in Achieving UA.
19:28:18 From Claire Craig to Everyone:
@Barrack, I agree. I have found that to be an issue as well (not in Africa) but around some of my IT colleagues
19:28:19 From Barrack Otieno to Everyone:
Well, @Jonathan Maybe we need to train a critical mass that can then showcase more UA usecases from a local end users perspective, does that make sense. I am speaking from a perspective of having been involved in organizing a local training and the feedback i got
19:28:19 From Ajay Data to Everyone:
@barrack - there are many practical use case and important one as I said in my presentation too. Happy to support a joint discussion in your region. please write to us on info@uasg.tech . Hope it will help.
19:28:46 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
@Barrack, feedback from developers?
19:28:57 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
I would explain but my connection is too poor ;=)
19:28:58 From Satish Babu to Everyone:
There is a talk later today on The Role of Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) in Achieving Universal Acceptance by Sarmad, organized by NIXI at 10:30 UTC.
19:29:52 From Holly Raiche to Everyone:
@Cheryl - the availability of broadband even close to urban areas is a disgrace
19:29:59 From Sarmad Hussain to Everyone:
There is an ICANN Learn course on UA which can be used broadly.
19:30:07 From Barrack Otieno to Everyone:
@Jonathan, the feedback came more from local registrars, maybe next time we will target the developer Community.
19:30:13 From Holly Raiche to Everyone:
And Thanks Satish
19:30:17 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:

19:35:06 From Justine Chew to Everyone:
@Ajay, possible, but do it on a regional basis perhaps?
19:35:51 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
I just think we need something standardized so that it's more easily tracked and evaluated
19:36:18 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Thanks for the presentation :-)
19:36:32 From Ajay Data to Everyone:
Thank you Cheryl .
19:36:32 From Justine Chew to Everyone:

19:53:06 From Satish Babu to Everyone:
I think the IGF MAG is meeting this week in person at Geneva, and the IGF event is still being planned as hybrid.
19:53:24 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
Poland not doing so well, unfortunately
19:57:10 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
I DONT BELIEVE THE COMMUNITY IS UNIFIED ON THE VALUE OF PLENARIES
19:57:13 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Oops
19:57:16 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Sorry for the all caps
19:57:20 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
My bad :)
19:57:30 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Forgiven @Jeff ;-)
19:58:27 From Erich Schweighofer to Everyone:
Plenary = agora, e.g. a bit of reality and chaos. Important and necessary for a bottom-up society.
19:58:27 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
The community is turning away from meetings generally because they are literally an extension of every day work. There's nothing to look forward to so they are evaporating. Need to improve them or get back to F2F
19:58:32 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
I know other parts of the community want to see more interactive policy development sessions as opposed to plenaries because they are not as interactive as they should be
19:59:41 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
A plenary can be anything, Jeff. It's just unconflicted. There's nothing innately non-participatory about them.
19:59:49 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
And to be honest, I agree with that point of view. I wish plenaries were structured as true discussions as opposed to death by power point
20:00:28 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
@Jeff this has been the At-Large approach - pref. no ppts!
20:00:29 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Plenaries have turned into sessions where one person from each SG/C/AC gets to speak their personal view
20:01:14 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
There are rarely set goals for the session, milestones, and action items out of them.
20:01:22 From Justine Chew to Everyone:
@Leon, no definitely not thinking of ABRs. I understand it is for community-wide requests
20:01:33 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
So, until we fix those problems, I would not be in favor of more plenaries personally
20:02:00 From Jonathan Zuck to Everyone:
But @Jeff, it's OUR job to fix them, no?
20:02:09 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
thank Léon
20:02:29 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@jonathan - yes. Demonstrate that even 1 plenary can be done right, and then we can work out more
20:02:40 From Holly Raiche to Everyone:
Thanks JZ - agree. The issue is not more or less plenaries, but their structure. I personally find them informative
20:03:45 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Holly - is the point of Plenaries to provide information, or to provide avenues for discussions…I believe it should be the latter. But I am just one person.
20:04:18 From Holly Raiche to Everyone:
@ Jeff - why not both?
20:05:42 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Holly….sure. But to date, most of them take the form of information only. And we don’t need a Plenary for that.
20:10:18 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
With so many minority reports, its hard to figure out what there was truly consensus on
20:11:05 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Alan - that was tried in 2001-2004 and that led to so many issues
20:11:24 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
It led to making portability issues
20:11:37 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
And also led to bad actions by losing registrars
20:12:01 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
I think it is important for the ALAC to go back and look at the history of transfers.
20:12:29 From Alan Greenberg to Everyone:
@Jeff, it is a somewhat different world now compared to 2001-4.
20:12:44 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Its more secure these days
20:12:45 From Holly Raiche to Everyone:
@ Jeff - what we don’t want is a process where the registrant does not have the opportunity to stop a transfer they did not request
20:13:02 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Auth Codes added the necessary confirmation
20:13:32 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
The registrant must initiate it with the appropriate auth codes. And most registrars also to 2 Factor Authentication.
20:13:49 From Alan Greenberg to Everyone:
In 2001, I was annoyed if I had to confirm something that I had requested. Today I am grateful.
20:13:50 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
So, the registrant is confirming it several times.
20:14:26 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Alan - I think requiring a confirmation after the fact is a huge step backwards for portability.
20:15:17 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
As someone who gets so many e-mails, I am more likely to miss a confirmation e-mail than to have my auth code stolen and used against me.
20:15:36 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Plus with 2 FA at my registrar that is overkill.
20:16:09 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Perhaps a registrant could have the option of requiring a confirmation….but to require it for all is a huge step backwards and does not benefit end users
20:16:46 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
ALAC Liaison to the GNSO Council updates are at https://community.icann.org/display/atlarge/GNSO+Liaison+Reports
20:17:26 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
nothing to pick out from our last GNSO Council Meeting to raise at this call...
20:17:28 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Think about it. I have to log into my account with a password….Then I have to enter a token for the 2FA. Then I have to request the transfer. Then I have to enter yet another token (called an Auth Code). Then the registrar asks “Are you sure” before hitting submit.
20:18:09 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
With all of that in place, why do we need to do an affirmative confirmation by e-mail after the fact (when those e-mails can be easily copied for phishing purposes)
20:19:49 From Greg Shatan to Everyone:
Jeff, I guess the issue is whether the "I" is guaranteed to be you?
20:19:51 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
When it doubt….always blame Neuman ;)
20:20:15 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
LOL
20:20:18 From Greg Shatan to Everyone:
Neumannnn!
20:20:20 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
LOL
20:21:00 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Greg - With 2FA it is much more of a guarantee than an e-mail which can be so easily spoofed.
20:21:04 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
and phished
20:21:07 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
So yes
20:23:07 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Thanks for the update @JZ
20:23:48 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
@Maureen - It happens to all of us :)
20:25:26 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Register for ICANN in general or a special At large registration?
20:26:02 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Sorry if that is a dumb question
20:26:04 From Dave.Kissoondoyal to Everyone:
echo
20:26:33 From Heidi Ullrich - ICANN org to Everyone:
Hi Jeff, please register for for ICANN sessions for the prep week calls.
20:26:36 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
Back on zoom
20:26:45 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Thanks Heidi.
20:26:50 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
General Register @Jeff
20:28:32 From Cheryl Langdon-Orr to Everyone:
Sorry I need to transition to my next call... Bye for now
20:28:43 From Maureen Hilyard to Everyone:
Bye Cheryl..
20:31:45 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
One thing about the SSAC is that they very quietly release their SSAC documents. It would be great if when the SSAC released their papers that they did so through the main ICANN news link as opposed to just posting it on their site.
20:32:12 From Justine Chew to Everyone:
@jeff, tell SSAC?
20:32:15 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
For example, I just noticed SSAC 117 when I went to their site that was released in July.
20:32:28 From León Felipe Sánchez Ambía to Everyone:
Thanks everyone!
20:32:31 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
I have…but they said it was up to Org
20:32:38 From Herb Waye Ombuds to Everyone:
Take care everyone, stay safe and be kind
20:32:42 From Satish Babu to Everyone:
Bye!
20:32:42 From Evin Erdogdu - ICANN org to Everyone:
Thank you all!
20:32:45 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:
Thanks all!
20:32:48 From Justine Chew to Everyone:
@Jeff, then tell Org?
20:33:07 From Dave.Kissoondoyal to Everyone:
Thanks and bye to all.
20:33:14 From Claire Craig to Everyone:
take care everyone, and thanks all
20:33:17 From Jeffrey Neuman to Everyone:

20:33:18 From Roberto to Everyone:
