09:44:29 From Sivasubramanian Muthusamy : Designating ICANN as the Data Controller might actually solve most of the risks of the contracted parties; If ICANN were to be the Data Controller, and were to write to GDPR as a global multistakeholder body and as custodian of the DNS, that it has to have thick whois, it will make a distinction between legal vs natural persons etc, that effectively seeks to create a class of Data (DNS) that GDPR can't possibly classify as offensive.

This happens because there are certain policies such as Registry Data Escrow policy etc, whereby the Registries submit Data to ICANN (or to an escrow, approved by ICANN). By this process, already the data is in a sense with ICANN. Expand the process a little more, dump all the headaches of LDAP request processing etc, onto ICANN, ICANN also happens to be well placed as a global body of stature to "oppose" or "challenge" excessive requests / excessive directives.

How did ALAC agree to the EPDP in the first place?
